Interview by Robert Cavuoto
Coming on the heels of renewed and enthusiastic interest in the band thanks to their classic song “Do Ya Wanna Taste It” being the theme song for HBO’s Peacemaker series, Out of the Dark sees an already extremely talented band feeling reinvigorated and inspired.
Åge Sten Nilsen [vocals], Trond Holter [guitarist], Bernt Jansen [bassist], and Øystein Andersen [drums] formed in Halden, Norway, in 2001 and have been mixing ’80s inspired glam metal with classic hard rock, with entertaining lyrics and over-the-top imagery thrown in, to create a good old fashioned rock n’ roll vibe for over two decades.
Wig Wam are skilled masters at songwriting; with distortion cranked up and no regard for the rules, they go beyond the riffs and catchy hooks. Each song is laced with intricate guitar fills and nuances that bring the song to life, provided by guitarist Trond. Combine that with Åge’s powerful voice and tongue & cheek lyrics, Bernt’s thunderous rhythm, and Øystein solid backbeat and serving-the-song drumming strike a perfect balance. When it all comes together, it’s explosive like on new songs “Bad Luck Chuck,” “Ghosting You,” “God By Your Side,” and the latest single “High N Dry”! I had the pleasure of speaking with Åge Sten Nilsen about the creation of the songs on the new album, the importance of injecting humor into his lyrics, how the band is invigorated with their recent and well-deserved success, and looking forward to finally touring the US!
