The new EP from thrash and punk crossover outfit TURN COLD was born out of pandemic-induced isolation. Beginning with living room demos and remote track swapping, it wasn’t until they were able to enter the studio again that these three songs really started to come together.
Break Your Faith is a collection of three thrash metal tracks that focus on the events of the past year. This EP acts as a document of the struggle to navigate the world’s current landscape and TURN COLD’s frustration will resonate with listeners around the globe.
The title track launches kicking and screaming from the speakers with razor-sharp riffing over a relentless MAIDEN-lite gallop accompanied by a piercing and deliberate vocal delivery from frontman Sten. ‘Delusion Solution’ summons a palpable doomsday sense of foreboding with a gallows march led by driving, thundering percussion. Twin lead guitars erupt atop a rhythm section that builds towards a finale of explosive and anthemic speed metal.
Finishing with ‘The End of My Rope,’ TURN COLD deal head-on with the burden of seclusion and isolation through its dark, dark lyrics. It’s volcanic, energetic, and intense, with some dynamic tempo changes and hardcore riffs before stopping cold into an uneasy silence to close out the EP. Sadly, however, while the vocals are indeed powerful, they just don’t do it for me. It is a harsh and gritty tone that begins to grate on the ears pretty quickly and some variation would have done wonders.
TURN COLD has produced a pummelling effort that captures the harsh reality of alienation and self-reflection. Break Your Faith is a devastating release both musically and emotionally; an impressive debut from a new act poised to break ground and explore their future.
