DIRTY HONEY, one of the brightest rising stars in rock, sees its debut full-length album, the Dirty Honey Album released today. What
Loudwire cited as “one of this year’s most promising releases,” the album kicks off with the debut single, “California Dreamin’,” dubbed “a big riff rocker” by Rolling Stone, and already a Top 20 hit at rock radio. The album was produced by Nick DiDia (Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam) and recorded last fall at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles.
The Dirty Honey Album features eight new songs that capture the lightning-in-a-bottle dynamics and energy of the band’s live sound. “California Dreamin’,” with its massive riffs and smoking guitar solos, “Tied Up,” a sultry and soulful rocker, “Gypsy,” that showcases plenty of swagger and gritty guitar work, “The Wire,” leaving no doubt that Marc LaBelle is one of contemporary rock’s best vocalists, and “Another Last Time,” a mid-tempo, organ-fueled album closer with its bittersweet lyrics and bursting with soul, are just a few of the nuggets on this album.
The Los Angeles-based quartet – vocalist Marc LaBelle, guitarist John Notto, bassist Justin Smolian, and drummer Corey Coverstone – had planned to board a jet on March 17, 2020, to join up with DiDia at his Byron Bay, Australia studio to begin recording the new album; but, literally 24 hours prior to take-off, COVID-related travel restrictions and border closings were initiated, putting a complete halt to that plan. In retrospect, that might have been a blessing in disguise. The band rented a rehearsal space and began writing and rehearsing on a regular basis. “When we were initially scheduled to record in Australia,” said LaBelle, “we had a handful of songs that were in various states of completion, but because of the pandemic, we had the time to finish them, write more, and feel really confident about them. We went into the studio with twice as many songs as we had in March.”
As challenging a time as living through the pandemic was, Dirty Honey wanted to write and record a high-energy, fun rock’n’roll album, full of soul, sexy riffs, and the promise of good times ahead. As Notto recently told CNN, “It’s starting to feel like normal days again.”
