Project Resurrect is a project based in New York and born in 2016 by the hand of drummer Wayne Noon and guitarist Peter Rigopoulos; Due to the lack of musicians, they decided to start their own songs and contacted the Brazilian vocalist, Leandro Bastos, who from Germany recorded his vocal parts. Even though the project sails with the flag of power / speed metal, its music scratches other grounds.
At the beginning of May the trio released their debut album: FALSE REALITY (2021), a completely self-produced work consisting of eight songs. Considering the enormous level that exists in the underground American power metal scene, it is fair to say that FALSE REALITY undoubtedly falls below average.
At the production level, the deficiencies of a self-produced work are still noticeable, such as some details in the mix, especially in the voice and the way in which the guitars were recorded. An example of this can be found in the introductory licks of “Keep Moving On”, the volume of which is heard very low.
However, the album also has some successes, as in the song “Dead Mountain”, where they solved their semi-acoustic introduction very well and went to distortion without any problem. Despite all the details, here the enormous merit is that the duo of musicians looked for a way to bring their own music to life and crystallized it in a very good way.
At the compositional level they can still improve a lot. The harmony between the guitar and the drums is perfectly noticeable, making very precise changes in the compositions and integrating auctions at the ideal moments. Where they fail a bit is in the structure, since their choruses do not explode because the pieces do not generate tension in the absence of pre-choruses or bridges.
Technically it all comes down to riffs and chords, putting aside harmonized guitars and high-tech licks, indispensable ingredients for any band that sails under the banner of power metal. And it’s not that they can’t do it, it’s that they don’t exploit it enough; “Ride or Die” is a great example of hidden power that could be further exploited.
Project Resurrect is a great example of will and love for music; this debut album will definitely help them to see all the elements that can improve, since undoubtedly we are facing musicians with enormous potential. The environment that surrounds them is extremely favorable for overcoming obstacles.
