Victoria K is an Australian artist who last year debuted with her album: ESSENTIA (2020). The work was the culmination of a journey that began in 2016 with the launch of MONSTER. The two main attractions of her lie in a spectacular voice and a great intuition to compose, something that was evident in her first full length. In an attempt to continue offering content and as a palliative to the current situation, Victoria K presented at the end of January: LIVE ISOLATION CONCERT, a DVD where she performs the entire ESSENTIA album.
One of the first things you can see when watching Live Isolation Concert is that Victoria K is not merely a solo project; you can see a whole chemistry around the musicians who play with her: Julia Mammone (guitar), Martin Kawaler (bass), James Davies (drums) and Sheri Vengeance (gutturals). The concert offers a perfectly mixed sound that completely removes it from the sound that could be expected from a live concert, however, far from being a negative point, it is a merit because it speaks of the good technical state of each music; their interpretation is very accurate, showing many hours of rehearsal.
One detail against is the absence of a keyboard player. It would have been great if they had some session musician that allowed them not to resort to tracks; but it is understood that it is not possible to move with the freedom of other times. However, the absence of a keyboard player makes the concert sound more artificial.
As the name of this release says, it is a concert in isolation, so the band was located in a very small place but very well prepared for the occasion. Its staging offers a very interesting play of light as the colors come from behind occasionally leaving the band against the light and generating shadows that become very attractive visually. The camera management is also very accurate; the number of cameras used is sufficient as it allows each member of the band to be fully appreciated without any problem.
If you haven’t heard ESSENTIAL yet, LIVE ISOLATION CONCERT is an excellent opportunity to hear the album for the first time. The impression left by the band in this presentation is very good; Victoria K’s voice is phenomenal and the musicians’ performance does the album’s sound justice. This is an excellent opportunity to make a good first impression.
