Best of 2020: The Elitist Metalhead

Spread the metal:

Best of 2020

1. Havukruunu – Uinuos syömein sota

This Finnish Pagan Black Metal Band came across my radar back in 2017. This album just blew me away from the very start. Epic black metal with some great traditional metal elements and godly solos. One listen and you can see why this was why I chose this as my Album of the Year!

2. Enslaved – Utgard

Enslaved have this habit of pumping out amazing album after amazing album. You have a lot of detractors when it comes to modern Enslaved. I think they are missing out on some of the best music that Enslaved have ever done.

3. Iron Savior – Skycrest

Iron Savior return with a vengeance with not only their best album in about a decade but quite possibly one of their best ever. The songwriting is incredible and the production is huge!! It seems their time has finally come!

4. Finntroll – Vredesvävd
5. Ironflame – Blood Red Victory
6. Eternal Champion – Ravening Iron
7. Traveler – Termination Shock
8. Hellripper – The Affair of the Poisons
9. Hrom – Legends of Powerheart: Part II
10. Eoront – Gods Have No Homes
11. Sylent Storm – The Fire Never Dies
12. Falconer – From a Dying Ember
13. Sorcerer – Lamenting of the Innocent
14. Hittman – Destroy All Humans
15. Incantation – Sect of Vile Divinities
16. Vader – Solitude in Madness
17. Ambush – Infidel
18. Katavasia – Magnus Venator
19. Dark Tranquillity – Moment
20. Horna – Kuoleman kirjo

Best Concert/Live Stream Concert

Enslaved played a number of Livestreamed shows during 2020 including a special show where the fans chose the setlist. They played songs they had not played ever. The highlight was “793 Slaget om Lindisfarne” in it’s entirety! Another amazing show they played “Below The Lights” all the way through!

My Favorite Discovery of 2020

Sylent Storm – The NWOTHM is alive and in full force and I love finding new bands that keep the old school metal flame alive. Sylent Storm is my favorite discovery of 2020. They play an epic traditional metal with killer riffs, godly solos and epic vocals. Their sophomore album, THE FIRE NEVER DIES, was in my top 20.

Disappointments of 2020

I can’t say there was one album that truly disappointed me. The new albums from some of the classic bands like Armored Saint and Fates Warning just did not do much for me this time around. Fates Warning’s album was a step back from the previous two. As for Armored Saint they sound great, John Bush does not sound like he aged at all. The songs were just not that strong.

Concert plans that were destroyed by the COVID-19

After being postponed the first time and rescheduled from April to September of 2020, the Devastation on The Nation Tour with Borknagar and Rotting Christ was finally cancelled due to no end to this shit in site!

Hopes for 2021

New albums from Accept, Michael Schenker, Einherjer, Borknagar, Darkthrone, Duskmourn as well as the return of Daniel Ethereal Magnanimus Heiman, who is handling vocals for Greek power metal band Warrior Path. Hopefully we will also see a new King Diamond album in 2021 too!
