Best of 2020: Dennis “Schwermetallisch”Eikenkötter

Spread the metal:

#1. Wytch Hazel – III: Pentecost

These fine Gentlemen from Lancaster, UK flew under my Radar for far too long, to describe the sound of Wtych Hazel is a task of its own. The channel the peacefulness and tranquility of 70’s stoner pioneers but at the same time narrate their tales with NWOBHM guitar riffing. This is the border between Hard Rock and Heavy Metal and it is one of the most beatifully composed records i ever reviewed.

#2. The Hawkins – Silence is a Bomb

The Discovery of the year for me are The Hawkins, these guys merge Queen, The Hellacopters, Muse and The Darkness without skipping a beat or sounding forced for one second. Johannes Carlsson is a brilliant vocalist with pipes of gold and his bandmates are just a perfectly fitting addition to his own talents (the guitar sound is beyond awesome). i am a fan now and i likely will be forever.

#3. Sorcerer – Lamenting of the Innocent

Sorcerer is a band that has been around forever but never got quite as big as they should have because they were inactive for a fucking long time. Well Sorcerer returned a few years ago and they managed to position themselves extremely good with high quality outputs and with the addition of new blood (Kristian Niemann – Guitar/Peter Hallgren – Guitar and Justin Biggs – Bass). To call this record an Epic Doom Masterpiece is a matter of course, the songwriting, compositional and instrumental execution is what we call top notch. I am thrilled to witness these guys live.

#4. Heathen – Empire of the Blind

Heathen - EMPIRE OF THE BLIND

#6. Annihilator – Ballistic, Sadistic

#7. Seven Sisters – Campfire Tales

#8. Haunt – Flashback

#9. Howling Giant / Sergeant Thunderhoof – Turned To Stone Chapter 2

#10. Eisenhauer – Blessed be the Hunter

#11. TDW – The Days the Clock Stopped

#12. Temple of The Fuzz Witch – Red Tide

#13. Spirit Adrift – Enlightened in Eternity

#14. Acacia – Resurrection

#15. Eternal Champion – Ravening Iron

#16. Judicator – Let there be nothing

17. Old Mother Hell – Lord of Demise

#18. Phantom Hound – Mountain Pass

#19. Wolftooth – Valhalla

#20. Valley of the Sun – Old Gods

Best Demo: Helios – Helios

Best Remake Album: Diamond Head – Lightning to the Nations 2020

Best Concert: Riot City, Traveler, Midnight Force in Oberhausen March 2020

Best New Band: Possessed Steel

My Favorite Discovery of 2020 was : The Hawkins

Best Comeback of 2020: Heathen

Did you have plans for a specific concert or festival in 2020 that were destroyed by the COVID-19 pandemic?

Rockhard Festival 2020. The billing was a fierce one but it should not be (upside is that now I know many of those kick-ass musicians and will meet them backstage ^^)

As a result of little to no live music in 2020, did you spend more or less money on albums this year?

I did spend almost nothing because of the 400+ reviews I did (no time to listen to stuff aside from writing)

Hopes for 2021:

The end of Pandemics, Lockdowns and other musical cockblocks!
