The new year will start with a bang with the release of Transilvania’s OF SLEEP AND DEATH. Transilvania is a blackened thrash outfit that formed in 2014 in Austria. Black metal and thrash, when done correctly, is always a beautiful thing, and these guys do it very well.

Their sound is a bit unhinged, sometimes old-school, and raw at times. It may be the production, or it may be on purpose. Either way, it fits perfectly here and is a sound I would say they should never try to polish. With their blend of genres, you can hear the influence of the late 80’s to early 90’s German thrash and black metal sounds.

There are a few melodic points that enter the realm from time to time. They seem to set these moments in just the right spots as a break in the monotony of the neck-breaking fury unleashed throughout the disc. Not that the heavier side of Transilvania’s music is repetitive because it is not.

OF SLEEP AND DEATH is one of those albums that sounds better and better each time I listen. And with each listen, you will too be able to hear the nuances of many greats of the scene. Nifelheim, Dissection, and Tormentor to Mercyful Fate, Opeth (early), and Kreator, to name a few. So check out the video here, and you, too, will be an instant fan. I know I was.
