Bombastic metal band Corrosium from Kytäjä, Finland emerged in the final stretches of 2020 to deliver us their brand new EP, Undertow. Unlike their debut album, for which some of the songs were written before the formation of the band, the songwriting process for Undertow was specific to the EP. The band still honoured themselves and their signature sound, while displaying their evolution into deeper songwriters with more complex compositional skill.
If you’ve never heard the term “bombastic metal” then you may be wondering exactly what kind of sounds this genre is categorised by. If you asked the band, they’d tell you to “imagine driving a freight train 90mph in the northern lights”. Understanding this definition comes easy once you’ve given them a proper listen. Electronic elements bleed in through a classic heavy base of live instruments, Teppo Tirkkonen‘s vocals at times bearing nuances reminiscent of Ozzy Osbourne in the higher register. Otherwise, he is epic within his dark and growly mystique that sits fittingly over a Neo-Gothic landscape of production.
While each musician in Corrosium is clearly technically and artistically skilled, and their concepts are good, I feel as though overall the build is underwhelming for me. Alongside many intriguing moments on the EP, sadly I also failed to feel truly captured at any given point past an analytical point of view. Anyhow, Undertow is catchy, nicely arranged, and well-produced, with no visible flaw other than the tendency to teeter between aptitude and mediocrity. Despite its lack of magnetism to my personal tastes, there were notable pieces that came through. “I Remain”, which is probably the best track, finished the EP off with strong opening melodies and a building dynamic layered with interesting lyrics. My hope for these guys is to see them continue to play and build their sound, and hopefully we will see a distinctive third release in the near future.
Overall, it’s worth checking out “bombastic metal” for yourself and giving Corrosium a play! Stream Undertow HERE.
