Of all the old school bangers still around, Sodom might be the best at what they do in terms of pure thrash and speed metal.  Sodom are one of the few bands around that have remained steadfast and true to their scene, having never changed their image or musical style to fit the times.  The genius of Sodom, or rather Tom Angelripper, is zeroing in on a sound and not veering away from it.  And that’s a pretty good summation of Sodom’s new record, Genesis XIX, dropping November 27thin North America via Entertainment One.

Sodom isn’t breaking new ground with Genesis XIX and that’s ok, there’s not too much left to be broken after four decades, so the question becomes, are they elevating what they do from a sonic perspective?  Musically the band sounds tight and energized. There’s enough tasty mosh beats and circle pit rhythms to satisfy the staunchest of fans, the riffs are fired off in trademark Sodom fashion and Angelripper’s voice doesn’t sound any different now than it did back in the “Agent Orange” days.

A great example is “Sodom and Gomorrah,” the best song on this record and a metal anthem in its own right, something I don’t say lightly. This track is a rager of epic proportion, played at breakneck speed and something of a wink and a nod to the golden days of Motorhead and Venom. Following suit is “Glock ‘n’ Roll” and “Friendly Fire,” both possessing all the earmarks of classic tunes in the making proving that Sodom can’t be touched when playing this style of stripped down, balls to the wall thrash.

I dig the fact that Sodom has decided to drop brand new music at a time when we as metal fans need it the most.  To me that shows integrity and class, especially knowing they can’t tour behind it but can still give the metal community something fresh to dig their teeth into until live shows return.  Genesis XIX drops November 27th.  Don’t be a poser.  Buy this record immediately.
