Eight months after dropping the epic and lumbering, “The Ghost of Orion,” UK doom and gloomers My Dying Bride have returned with new music, a four track EP “Macabre Cabaret.”  The title track, also the first tune on this record, clocks in at a mere 10:17.  Yep, the band isn’t messing around.  However, if you’re looking for metal you might want to look elsewhere.  “Macabre Cabaret” is a deep dive into the darkness that fills a man’s spirit.

“Macabre Cabaret,” the title track, follows the blueprint My Dying Bride laid out on their previous long player, “The Ghost of Orion”: Sprawling progressive doom over a gothic-Victorian soundscape. With that in mind, “Macabre Cabaret” sounds like the band Tool coupled with My Dying Bride with a pinch of funeral dirge tossed in for good measure.

A haunting musical amalgamation of keys, strings and spoken vocals dominate track two, “A Purse of Gold and Stars.” The vocals are unique and captivating, somewhere between the tone of Jim Morrison and the deep intonation of Type O Negative’s Peter Steele, assuming the role of both narrator and navigator, taking us on a journey that’s uniquely My Dying Bride.

Track three, “A Secret Kiss” is the heaviest song on this EP and maybe the heaviest song My Dying Bride has done in years. The lads open with some crushing Saint Vitus styled riffage that puts the doom back in metal again.  The music is dark, the vocals are ominous, and that aforementioned St. Vitus influenced guitar riff is a guide marker of the sheer depth of sorrow and despair My Dying Bride can plunge into.

In the end, after it’s all said and done, what do you have?  Another stellar My Dying Bride record.  “Macabre Cabaret” is a must buy disc for sure.
