Tokyo Blade is one of those bands that did quite well at the tail-end of the New Wave OF British Heavy Metal and despite never achieving high levels of global success, they had enough cache and prestige to linger in the memories of many Metal fans.

Accordingly the band has never really gone away, in spirit or in reality. The band is still making albums,  they have six or seven studio albums since the ‘glory’ days of the early 80’s, and a whole slew of compilations on the market that have helped keep the bands name in the public eye.

Back in 2017 the good people at Cherry Red / Hear No Evil Records put out a cool little four disc Tokyo Blade box-set which sold out in a flash. I missed it the first time around but obviously demand was high enough that they made some more!  I was lucky enough to snag one this time around.

KNIGHTS OF THE BLADE is a good-looking clam-shell style box with four CD’s and a booklet. This is of note because often these reissue series just have a fold-out poster with the bare minimum but this one has a 16-page fill colour booklet with an essay and a tone of photos as well as all the technical credits.  NWOBHM expert John Tucker writes a passionate and enthusiastic essay and we are treated to all the art from the various singles and EP’s as well.

Disc One is the iconic self-titled debut album from 1983. Disc two is the second album, NIGHT OF THE BLADE from 1984, perhaps my favourite, but ask me tomorrow and I’ll say the debut is my favourite.   Disc Three treats us with BLACK HEARTS & JADED SPADES with it’s hideously ugly album cover.  While solid to the core some fans were disappointed with the new singer, the stylistic change (dropping the Japanese motif) and the more accessible Hard Rock sounds. It’s still a great album.

Disc Four is a massive treasure trove of 19 hard to find tracks. I will admit there is nothing ‘technically’ formally unreleased but trying finding a decent copy of one of those vinyl-only singles these days! Good luck!  On the last disc, simply called ‘Singles and EP’s’, we get the MADAME GUILLOTINE EP, the MIDNIGHT RENDEZ-VOUS EP and the slightly harder to find CAVE SESSIONS EP.   In addition we get to enjoy the ‘Power Game’ single, the ‘Lightning Strikes’ single and a pair of ‘Undercover Honeymoon’ singles.  All of these are increasingly rare and nice to have in one comprehensive set.

This really is the perfect collection I feel like I say this every-time I get one of these cool reissue box-sets but I’m so glad I have an inexpensive option to upgrade my collection of 30+ years old Tokyo blade cassettes I bought back when they came out.  Lastly, Don’t forget to check out the brand new Tokyo Blade album DARK REVOVLUTION, available now!
