If you are a connoisseur of the gloomy side of gothic doom-laden metal, you will be in for a surprise here. Amederia is just that. Hailing from Russia, Amederia has been in existence since 2006. This particular release is a re-issue of the band’s 2008 release. From what I can gather up, SOMETIMES WE HAVE WINGS was initially released in 2008 by Molot Records.
This re-issue on BadMoodMan Music follows up the band’s 2014 album on the same label. I typically do not seek out the melancholy with regards to the music. There are a few that I do, but only a select few. It is not that I do not like it. It is just one of those things.
This album is pretty damn good. It starts off with a piano instrumental that could almost put one to sleep. A beautiful arrangement, just a sadness to it that makes you want to close your eyes and forget about everything. Hey, that may be a good thing these days. The softly keyed piano passage weave their way in and out of every aspect of this album. It makes sense on the gothic side of the realm, as does it on the doomier passages.
When it comes to the side of doom metal here, it is that traditional doom that I usually first think of when the word comes up. Very slow and drugging along at a snail’s pace. And as with any good gothic/doom band, Amederia’s music is filled with sadness, lost dreams, and broken love. One thing I like here is the vocals. There are a few spoken word parts, but it is the guttural growls of the male vocals layered in parts and accompanied by the soft and almost operatic female vocals that make this music work.
Atmospheric and gloomy best describes Amederia’s style of gothic metal. Although their music is not too heavy when it comes to calling it metal, there are moments of heaviness that warrants their rightful place on this site.
If you are into the likes of Theatre of Tragedy, Draconian, Symphonian, and Edenian, Amederia is a band right up your alley. It is a dreary and churning ride into an infinite realm of beauty and darkness.
