Now here’s something you don’t see every day – some female-fronted melodeath from Bulgaria! I admit I had to look at a world atlas and ‘refresh my memory’ as to where that is. Now Bulgaria can add quality melodeath to its list of exports along with machinery and chemicals.

The demo was self-produced by the band, and they did an excellent job making it sound good on a presumably limited budget. Overall the tempo is more on the melodic side than the thrash or death metal side, and the songs have plenty of catchy riff changes. Vocalist Mirela Kaneva has a sound that reminds me of the low growls of Krista Shipperbottom (Lutharo). Bassist Alexander Trifonov adds some clean backing vocals in places that are a nice contrast. Mirela adds a bit of her own clean vocals to “In Desolate Silence” and I think she pulled it off well. Thanks to the clean production both vocalists can be heard clearly and aren’t too far back in the mix.

“The Artist” begins with an acoustic piece, then takes off into an aggressive thrash pace and is one of the heavier songs on the demo. The lyrics are interesting too – describing a Goddess of Nature painting some color into a world of gray. Drummer Ivan Kolev gives us some short blast beats in this one, letting us know Deadscape can turn up the heat if they want to.

“Forsaken” and “Ending” are really solid tracks too; it’s a shame that there are only four songs here. If the band were to put together four or five more like the ones on this demo then they’d have a very strong debut album. Hopefully some label support will follow – Deadscape are a band with a lot of potential.
