Motörhead – ’79

Released: 2019, BMG Music
Rating: 5/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

Been a Motörhead fan since I first saw “Killed By Death” on Much Music in the mid 80’s. It was after seeing them open for Alice Cooper in February ’88 that I became a big fan. Unfortunately, that would be the only time I would get to see them live. I was supposed to see them do back to back shows in February 2011 but an accident prevented me from making the trip. I guess it was never meant to be? Thankfully we have the music and this set delivers that, in spades.

I may be Months late getting this set but as the saying goes, “Better late than never”, and boy is that true. This set is amazing! From the opening track, “Overkill” until the last demo it was pure aural pleasure. This is a boxed set done right. I cannot say how these pressings compare to the originals or reissues of the past as I do not have them anymore as I regrettably traded most of my records in back in the 90’s and “Upgraded” (so I thought) to CD. Talk about a STUPID mistake. I can say that these LP’s are all nicely pressed on heavyweight vinyl. They are quiet and flat. My LP’s had no non-fill which some newer pressings suffer from. The package is top notch and of very high quality. Not cheaply made.

Listening to OVERKILL and BOMBER was like I was transported back to the 80’s, just with better audio gear. It sounded better than ever. The live albums are the way a live album is supposed to be, raw and real. Too many are touched up in the studio but this sounds like the real deal. For me it was the REST FROM ’79 record that had the major appeal. This was stuff I never heard before. The rare stuff, the demo recordings the true meaning of raw recording. Every minute was an enjoyable listen. For those moments we get a glimpse into how those iconic songs started out.

If you are on the fence about buying this set, do not hesitate and go get it. Now is the time to get it as the ACE OF SPADES one for ’80 has just been announced. Grab ’79 to hold you over untill the new one arrives.
