No Fucking Mercy is the second studio outing from Birmingham’s Arrogant Destruktor, a group of guys who love the old school sound of black metal and don’t pull any punches with their output.

In all, this record has all you’d want if you really dig Rotting Christ in their “Non-Serviam” days; Kreator when writing “Pleasure to Kill”; the pre-Viking themed Bathory, which sounds like a fun concoction for good music – and it’s a fun record to play but not quite a fully rounded explosion of black metal fire.

I’m not saying this album is a failure at all, it begins with some excellent blast beats and screams on “Steel and Spell”, and continues to blaze into your ears with all the right distortion and lo-fi buzzing that would make any old school fan smile.

The musicianship is excellent and precise, the kind you’d expect from a band who have spent their lives growing up in a world full of hard times and anger, which can lead to young people turning to dark fantasy for escapism, as this album presents. The use of keyboards makes No Fucking Mercy a tad different to the other guitar-driven old school emulating releases from this year, so a nice change of scene there.

“Midnight Graves,” is a memorable bop and the title track is definitely something you won’t forget in a hurry – but I think the reason it hasn’t scored that extra hurdle for me was that I heard it on the wrong format. “No Fucking Mercy” is a good example of an album made for the cassette world – old school fandom which lives by the old ways and follow bands who resent the new, digital formats.

If this album had come on a cassette, for which it was made, I think it would have packed a better punch. This is a release as good as a bunch of guys from Birmingham can come up with, as all the right elements of dark and bleak urban life do seem to echo from this album’s tracks. Overall, great job Arrogant Destruktor, and I hope this album sells well on its best platforms.
