Ratt was a big deal in the 80’s when I was growing up. They had hit albums, videos, big tours and were on the magazine covers. With five platinum or multi-platinum albums in a row, Ratt was a quintessential 80’s band. Everything after 1991, not so much.

Cherry Red and HNE has somehow secured the rights to issue the first five Ratt albums in a box set called THE ATLANTIC YEARS 1984-1990. I’m surprised, I thought that Atlantic (or however holds the IPR to Ratt catalogue) would not let it go cheap. Regardless, it’s nice to have these albums available again as an affordable set. This replaces my really worn out only Ratt cassettes perfectly.

Like most of the Cherry Red/HNE reissue boxsets,  this is a clamshell box housing five wallets. There is also a big fold-out poster with the technical info and notes from each album.

There are seven bonus tracks in this set and three of them are just single edits (for radio) of the big hits but there areas few little gems. The main one for me is the unreleased track, an acoustic version of the hit song, ‘Way Cool Jr.’ from the REACH FOR THE SKY album in1988. Back in the day many bands would record mini acoustic concerts sessions for MTV for a show called Unplugged. Over the years MTV filmed hundreds of these episodes, released dozens of these albums but virtually none them were Hard Rock. About a dozen Hard Rock artists appeared on the show but only Kiss ever ended up getting an album released. I never knew Ratt did one so what this means is that somewhere in the MTV cage is a complete acoustic Ratt album begging to be heard!  This cut was from August 11th, 1990 episode.

There are not one but two remixes of the song, ‘Lovin’ You’s A Dirty Job’ from DETONATOR. One, the ‘Ratt Fonic Radio Mix’ was a UK single mix and also appeared on the 1997 Ratt rarities album called COLLAGE. The other version, the ‘Ratt Fonic Monster Mix’, might actually be an unreleased track unless it appeared somewhere on the B-side of a Japanese single or something. I’ve never been a big fan of remixes in Metal and these are pretty horrible; techno, hip-hop, rap remixes with industrial crap ruining the song.  One version doubles the length of the original three minute long song to a six and a half minute unlistenable nightmare. I don’t know who thought this was a good idea to remix this song back in 1990 but I hope they got fired.

Lastly is a rarer track, a mid-tempo song called ‘Nobody Rides For Free’ originally appearing on the soundtrack for a movie called Point Break and eventually getting released in 1991 on a Ratt compilation called RATT & ROLL 8191. So the track is not unreleased but not common either.

Considering Ratt only did two more albums, this box set pretty much encapsulates the highlights of their stellar, almost unparalleled, five-album, multi-platinum run in the 80’s.
