For all the folk metal maniacs in the world, it is time to raise your tankards and rejoice! TUOPPITANSSI, the sophomore release by Finland’s own Verikalpa, is upon us.
Verikalpa is an entity that officially came about in 2015. From there, they have been gigging around their homeland as well as surrounding countries. The debut album TAISTELUTAHTO saw the light of day in February 2018 and was released by the Finnish label Inverse Records. The album had great reviews over the globe, and after the release, the band had many more gigs and festivals booked.
While touring on their first album, Verikalpa was hard at work writing for the second album for which we have now. And a great one it is. Sung entirely in their native tongue, as this type of metal almost requires, touches on the lyrical themes that seem to drive many of the folk metal bands these days. With tales of wars, battles, alcohol, weapons, mythical creatures, alcohol, and ancient times, Verikalpa checks all the boxes of what an excellent folk metal band should be.
The music is as authentic as it gets. Many other bands within the genre do as well. Verikalpa’s brand tends to be a bit on the heavier side of the spectrum. I guess I would say a bit more of a death metal twinge to the upbeat tempos. Their music is a lot more. With traditional folk being the center-piece of their sound, throughout, there is much more going on. The ingredients include the touches of thrash, death, black, to some progressive power metal to top things off.
I found this a really cool album to get hooked on. It does not bore the listener at all. I suppose that if one were going to be overly picky, there are not too many variations between most of the tracks as a whole. It is something you can overcome after a couple of more listens. Fans of Korpiklaani, Alestorm, Turisas, Trollfest, and Ensiferum, to name a few, will easily be able to embrace TUOPPITANSSI.
