Finland’s Insomnium is no stranger in the world of melodic death metal. They have been putting out some of the most sorrowful yet neck-breaking metal for just over 20 years now and like a fine wine, they too only seem to get better with age.

Not that the latest outing is less than any of its predecessors, it tends to hit every mark extremely well but one. And that one is nothing more than an edge over what has already been accomplished by the band. With HEART LIKE A GRAVE, each track seems just as stellar as the next. Which is perfectly fine for a lot of bands who choose this path as I have been a fan of theirs for a long, long time now.

As I say that, and as I listen to it here again for the fifth or sixth time, I am going to stick with my rating. It is a great album from start to finish. It has all the makings of another classic Insomnium album. The melancholic and sorrowful delivery of some very bleak and folklore lyrical content shifts into overdrive with sheer precision.

Fans of Amorphis, Dark Tranquility and In Flames are sure to enjoy. And then I think, these fans should already be into Insomnium as they are no less as great as them. I always look forward to new music from the guys as this is about as good as it gets within the melodic death metal community.
