If I’ve said it once prior, I need to take a moment and mention it again. When it comes to black metal, I can be a bit selective. There are many bands within the genre that to me are just pure noise. Sorry, that is just me, as I know there is quite the fanbase for the blast beat, icy and bone-chilling black metal that was started in the ’90s.

It is when I come across a band like Imperium Dekadenz, I get hooked in and tend to not only, as I am now, listening to WHEN WE ARE FORGOTTEN over and over, I will tend to search out others in similarity and run my ass down to the local record store.

Imperium Dekadenz came to life in Germany in 2004 by the duo Horaz and Vespasian. The band’s name was inspired by the ‘70’s movie ‘Caligula’, which was known as one of the most scandalous movies because of its extremely violent and pornographic scenes. Lyrically, the band touches on the typical genre subjects such as death, mourning, hate, and desperation.

Musically, their style can be described as atmospheric or melodic black metal. Depressive, ambient and acoustic elements are a mainstay within the tracks which also pummel the senses with a blazing and more old-school Norwegian black metal sound.

The band’s vocalist, Horaz had the following to say about the new album’s themes and inspirations: “Discover your inner darkness and you will find clarity. When We Are Forgotten is not a concept album, but a gallery of paintings giving a view into our hearts and thoughts. Moving away from the historical stages we usually use; we’ve created an intimate and atmospheric work that reflects the phase of our maturation and the progress of our passion: Imperium Dekadenz.”

The dynamic soundscape presented by these two is damn incredible. Almost unthinkable that this is a duo which did surprise the heck out of me after a couple of run-throughs of the album, I did my due diligence and looked up the bio page for a bit of info.

For those not quite into the black metal scene, there are actually a ton of bands who are just as, if not more musically proficient than your favorite artist of another genre. Imperium Dekadenz is one of those bands that makes you sit back in awe of the musical landscape they are laying out before you. There is no denying that the black metal genre is still on the uphill climb and growing bigger and better with every new band that hits the scene. Not that Imperium Dekadenz is a new band, but the music here makes its mark as another great black metal album that will create quite a stir in the industry.

And for those familiar with the band, here’s your newest favorite album. And those familiar with the likes of Winterfylleth, Drudkh, Nagelfar, Der Weg einer Freight may already know what I am talking about. If not, get off your lazy asses and get WHEN WE ARE FORGOTTEN by Imperium Dekadenz!
