As saturated as the black metal genre has become, it still manages to somehow be the most innovative subgenre in metal. Case in point – BOUNDLESS ARCANE INVOKATIONS, a new split LP from a pair of up and comers within the USBM scene – San Jose’s Black Fucking Cancer and Santa Cruz’s Gloam. Each band was independently tasked with crafting a song of the same name and concept, with the intention of each track bridging into the next, with no defined beginning or end. Or as their press release states, “ …a looped spell of infinite destruction.”

Black Fucking Cancer own the first side of the split, and at 22 minutes, their contribution is a swirling vortex of 1349 meets Oranssi Pazuzu blackened mysticism. There’s a lot to digest across the track, which works to its advantage in keeping you engaged for basically the duration of a Seinfeld rerun. There’s a distinct break about halfway into the track where the band flips from hypnotic, dissonant riffage into complete gonzo chaos for the remainder of the track, only to descend once again into the murky atmospheric depths in order to give rise to Gloam’s contribution. It’s a fantastic ride.

Speaking of Gloam, their 19 minute offering is more in the raw stripped down OSBM vein, which is just fine with me. Thematically, Gloam’s track is consistent with BFC and creates the sonic unification that was the impetus for this project, but it’s an entirely different tune. Like BFC, Gloam shifts gears about halfway in, transitioning into blackened doom territory for a few beats, only to roar back to life again with full breakneck acceleration. In the waning moments of their creation, the coda eventually settles into a deceptive repose, which in actuality tees up the perfect re-entry for Black Fucking Cancer. “A looped spell of infinite destruction” indeed…mission accomplished gentlemen.

I love the very idea that BOUNDLESS ARCANE INVOKATIONS exists and that these 2 bands were bold enough to not only attempt to make it work – but succeed. Neither Black Fucking Cancer nor Gloam were on my radar at all prior to this release, but I’m genuinely stoked to hear more from them in the future. Highly recommended for fans of traditional black metal and/or those of you that simply dig a different spin on familiar recipes, BOUNDLESS ARCANE INVOKATIONS is a spell worth casting.
