2019 sees the re-release of Boatman’s Toll self-released debut. The band from Chicago formed in 2012 and quickly started tearing up the local scene with their blend of caustic sludge and death. It is no wonder why See Red Records picked them up and that is why we are blessed with an expanded edition of THE FAT IS IN THE FIRE which has a couple extra tracks on it.
Boatman’s Toll is not your average sludge or death metal band. There, as always, seems to be a whole lot more in the mix here that makes it a nice offering. Not only does the band play a really good blend of sludge and death, they do not stop there. They tend to fuse a bit of old school thrash and stoner rock in the mix. The latter is evident in some of the more bluesy solos in the tracks.
One can hear bits of familiarities that harken to Gorjira, early Mastodon, Eyehategod as well as some new stoner bands like Vokonis, Arrowhead and Egypt. The integration of genre makes for a bit of a unique listening experience that promises not to dull the listener. Especially the first go around. This is a nice and groovy blend of genres that when done right, ends up with the title THE FAT IS IN THE FIRE!
