The Metal scene in Calgary is sizeable with over 75 active bands but small enough that if you have been in the scene long enough you will stat to bump into musicians who have been in a number of bands over the years. W.M.D is one of those bands. Formed from the ashes of Shrapnal, and featuring former members of Hrom and Gatekrashor, W.M.D. have being thrashing it out (literally!) on the local scene for a few years.

The band have issued a debut album called LETHAL REVENGE and is pretty nicely presented for an independent act.  It comes as a nice digipak with the usual liner notes, 4-page booklet with lyrics and so forth and an eye-catching red and white cover with a pentagram, skulls and pother appropriate thrash-like imagery.

After a long, but engaging instrumental, intro track called, ‘Ignition’ the band floors it and never looks back.  W.M.D. (When Minds Develop) are probably the purest expression of 80’s thrash in Calgary. Lyrically they cover the classic thrash topics including viruses, killing and of course thrashing!  I love the big backing gang-vocals in places like on ‘Toxic Burn’.  The band stay within the confines of traditional 80’s thrash and do it very well, but are not afraid to stretch their song-writing skills. There are some longer cuts and the 8+ minute title track, ‘Lethal Revenge’ and the occasional spoken word segment add some dynamics to the songs but largely, speed is the name of the game.  There are some decent brief acoustic interludes scattered across the songs as well giving us a break from the face-ripping thrash.

There is a term ‘retro-thrash’, which I’m not totally thrilled with because thrash never really went away, but there are more and more young bands like W.M.D.  who play this picture perfect style, no pretentions, no frills, just pure thrash.  And I love it. LETHAL REVENGE  is a very strong debut and after seeing them many times on the live circuit it is nice to see them live up to the promise and deliver the goods.
