While most of the other bands in this feature are relatively new (except Anvil) the other long-standing titan of Metal in this review session is… The Mighty Thor.   It is no secret I am a long time supporter of Thor and he has some seasonal presents for us.

Probably the most unique release in this batch of reviews is the new album CHRISTMAS IN VALHALLA!   Not only is it as the title might suggest a Christmas themed album, it is all original songs as well, not just cover tunes!   The band is still signed to the Cleopatra/Deadline group and they have issued his 20th-something album for the huddled masses.  The band is still intact from BEYOND THE PAIN BARRIER album, it is nice to see a bit stability.    The album also features pretty cool cover artwork by Marvel comics illustrator, Simon Williams.

The album, due to it’s nature is a little mellower than the last album. There are a few ballads, and some simple but nice acoustic guitar as well.  The band adds the track ‘Lend Me Your Ears’ from the ROCK AND ROLL NIGHTMARE  soundtrack album.  There is a hilarious remake of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ called ‘Not So Little Drummer Boy’. The highlight is the most metal tune of all, ‘Slay Rider’. Will any of these original compositions become timeless Christmas classics?  I’m not convinced but very few modern, original Christmas songs make it into public awareness, TSO being perhaps the only recent exception and even they are reworking older classical tunes.  The album ends on an evil note with a short but spooky narrated piece called ‘Cold Saint Nick’.

Yes, this albums is a bit of a novelty release but I don’t mind at all. I have an extensive collection of Hard Rock and Metal–themed Christmas albums and I am more than proud to add this one to the collection.
