Hailing from Saint Petersburg, Russia are Second to Sun. Formed in 2012 by guitarist Vladimir Lehtinen, THE WALK is the bands 3rd full-length release.
It seems that Second To Sun is a busy group that just released a full-length titled THE BLACK just six months ago. Also, it seems that the band releases their full-length efforts in twos. One version being just instrumentals accompanied by a storyline of images to tell the tale of the songs and another with vocals. I have the vocal version.
Their sound is a blend of genres for the most part. There are touches of groove metal, a little bit of thrash and atmospheric black metal while the overall feel is that of the more popular Scandinavian style of black metal made famous by the likes of Mayhem, Darkthrone and Emperor. I would lean more towards the Scandinavian sound on this one. It has its elements of the other mentioned genres but they do not over take any given track for more than a few moments at a time.
As I have stated many times before, I am picky when it comes to black metal. And though there was not an instant liking of any one track at first listen, not one was a turn off either. The tracks have their own life and feel to them. Almost majestic at times if that makes any sense. This is a very tolerable listen for those who like black metal that is more like music than just that one string being played 800 miles an hour with blast beats that don’t make sense.
Second to Sun may be a fairly new band, but they are making a name for themselves within the black metal community. A good offering here that makes me want to go after some of their back catalog now.
