Melodic Rockfest Scandinavia 2018

Malmo, Sweden
31/5-2/6 – 2018

Live review and pictures by: Anders Sandvall

The first edition of the Swedish festival, Melodic Rockfest, announced the first bands to perform at the middle of October last year in the radio show Steve Price Rock Show and as the name of the festival hints it focuses on the softer side of rock music within the hard rock genre. Bands that performed at the festival was Treat, FM, Dare, Kee Marcello, Crazy Lixx, Midnite City and Stage Dolls to mention a few. If you purchased the VIP ticket you were also going to get an exclusive acoustic performance by the ex- Alien singer Jim Jidhed. And at the end of November the festival announced the VIP tickets was sold out. The festival put on 7 bands per day and included visitors from Italy, South Korea, Russia, USA and Canada. Boulevard was added to the list in January and it was also then it was announced that Cruzh canceled their appearance, local act Colorstone came in as replacement. A pre-party was held the day before the festival started where Little Caesar performed. If you bought a VIP ticket you were also entitled to participate in an unplugged show with both Boulervard as well as the reunited Swedish AOR legends Bad Habit, it was also said there was going to be a meet and greet with the bands. If I got everything right the festival was originally founded by Andrew J McNiece back in 2007 and another version of the festival was held in May this year in USA. In Sweden the organizers of the festival was Rock Stage Malmo together with RoastingHouse, Dead End Exit Records, Folkuniversitetet, Studiefrämjandet, Dist FM, LAQ Stage Technologies and the radio show Rock Classics. This festival was placed the week before the notorious Sweden Rock Festival which is located not far at all from Malmo. Last band add to the list of band’s was Stage Dolls all and all it is about 21 band’s that will play this three days.

The place set for the festival was the old meat butcher house located a few minutes walking distance from the train station. Three of the bigger rooms inside the factory were devoted to host the festival as well as an outside area, the venue had a capacity to inhabit about 1500 people. At the beginning of the year the owners of the place filed for bankruptcy and it was uncertain of how it would end and what was going to happen with the festival, luckily everything was fixed and the festival could take place as planned.
