I love NWOBHM, so when I received this 3 CD set I immediately put it on and turned it up. It started off with “The Prince”, which I first became familiar with back in the day when Metallica did a cover of it. Being in a small town pre-internet days hearing the original was near impossible so it took a few years before I finally did. Hearing original versions of those songs, and more, made me a fan of the genre even though I didn’t yet have a label for it. Growing up in the 80’s, I was listening to Maiden, Def Leppard…the more mainstream NWOBHM without knowing it was a sub-genre.

Fast Forward to 2018 and this triple disc set comes across my hands, I was interested to say the least. Hearing some familiar bands like Raven, Angel Witch, Girlschool, Girl, Tygers Of Pan Tang among others made me haul out one of Martin Popoff’s books on the genre as I sat listening to some amazing music that defined an era. The music was raw, alive and most importantly, real. There was no computer fixes or auto-tune. This was real music. An energy was captured to tape that was unique. This set showcases that sound, that era perfectly. Anyone discovering the genre starts out with the basic bands but hearing them alongside some lesser knowns (to me at least) is fantastic. I am discovering bands I never heard of and ones that I heard the name but not the music. This is the perfect compilation for that.

This nice little set is well packaged in a flip open box with a book. The CD’s are housed in mini LP slipcases with the bands single covers as the artwork. The booklet has a nice little article by John Tucker (Neat Records). Very well put together.

Al in all, if you want to sample the NWOBHM or are one that lived it and want a compilation of some of your favorite bands for the car then this is it. Between this one and FLAME BURNS ON there are no better introductions (or summaries if you will) of a genre that helped build the Metal world as we know it.
