Oubliette came to be in 2011 which originally started out as a studio project by the husband and wife duo, Mike Low (Inferi) and vocalist Emily Low. It was not long after that Oubliette became a full band just prior to releasing their very well received 2014 album APPARITIONS. Since then, the group’s line-up has changed a bit to now include two members of the well-known black/death outfit Enfold Darkness.
When it comes to any genre, I am usually a bit picky of the bands I actually enjoy. I may have stated a time or two here that black metal is one of those genres in particular. The same goes for death metal too. Oubliette takes these two genres and has blended them so well it makes THE PASSAGE an exceptional album. This is an album that I have revisited many times now since receiving it.
It takes me back to the first time I listened to Opeth’s MORNINGRISE for the first time. I was mesmerized by that album and could not get enough of it at the time. THE PASSAGE not only is close in sound and style, but it is also doing the same to me that MORNINGRISE did to me.
This may not be the only melodic blackened death metal of its kind, but it sure as hell is one of the best. Fans of Dissection, Alcest, Moonsorrow and early Opeth will not only embrace the latest offering by Oubliette, they will love it!
