From the frozen wastes of Canada come Hallux. Their engaging assault is equal parts Black, Death and Thrash metal. At least according to their press release. If only the reality was half as exciting. Don’t get me wrong, this is decent stuff. It is just not that original.

The album opens with “Exordium” which is your basic standard spooky intro which builds to a predictable crescendo and the first track proper: “Herders of the Weak”. A track with a particularly deep groove and odd rhythms and jagged shards of melody. It is followed by “Yersinia Pestis”, a Thrashtacular anthem which is classy and expertly delivered. Similar to this is “Master Machine”, a dark aggressive ditty which wears its influences on its sleeve. Equally pleasing is the callous and frothing Heavy Metal of “Call of the Blackbird”, full of venom and a certain perverse joie de vivre.

Momentum is lost with “In Apathy” which does exactly what it says on the tin; a turgid and uninspired three and half minutes of wank. The band regain their mojo with “Shepherd Pig”, a melodic, malefic mass of marrow which is both tuneful and terrifying. And so it goes on with the savage grind of “Lowest Common Dominator” and the headlong hurtle of “Chosen Enemy”. The more aggressive “Absolved in Flames” is up next; its enraged vocal bellows and deranged howls complemented by the late 80s/early 90s DM stomp. The album is concluded with “None”, a Hardcore tinged melee, with snarling vicious vocals and barbaric yet hummable riffs.

What we have here could accurately be described as meat and potatoes metal. It is well performed but not especially spectacular. The guitar tone is chunky and warm, and the vocals are hoarse and combative. Many of the riffs are quite memorable, and the songs themselves are short and to the point. The band just need to work on being a little more original rather than a composite (albeit a good one) of their influences.
