On March 2, 2018 the Decibel Magazine Tour came through a very snowy Calgary, Alta., to take over the MacEwan Hall Ballroom. Our editor and the reviewer for the show, JP, was taken out by a flu so this article is mostly going to be a photo review of the show. The numbers for the show, like the bands were slow to gain momentum, but the treacherous roads weren’t going to keep people from seeing this show. By the time Wolves in the Throne Room took the stage the Ballroom was packed, with quite a few people squished into the 18+ section segregating the bar area from the rest of the room. The lighting, mood and sound was generally dark and languid for the first three bands. You can see in the photos a lot of backlighting was used and even when lights were set to light up the musicians, it was kept very dim.
When Enslaved finally took the stage there was a forceful and furious shift in energy and style. Everything about their set felt a little bit more in your face and intense. Although there were only seven songs on the set list, the entire set took about an hour. The crowd responded to the band’s banter, favourite songs and even the new material was welcomed loudly.
