As far as hard rockin’ supergroups go, The Dead Daisies might no be the biggest, but they certainly can lay claim to being one of the best. As of 2017 they’ve released 3 kickin’ studio albums and toured the world over. Not too bad for a band where the founding member is the least well-known guy. Interesting side note: by adding lead guitarist Doug Aldrich in 2016, the band now includes 3 guys that have served time in Whitesnake. Coincidence? Probably; but interesting to me all the same.
Recorded live across their recent European tour, LIVE & LOUDER captures the Daisies doing what they do best: kicking ass on stage. Looking like your crazy & cool (crazy cool?) hippie uncle, John Corabi leads the band through a set of rockin’ originals mixed with a healthy number of classic rock covers. His vocals are as great as they ever were, lending some great power to each song. But the rest of the Daisies are much more than a backing band and each member gets some time to shine throughout the set.
Still, people come for the songs and The Dead Daisies don’t disappoint. From low-slung rocking opener “Long Way to Go”, to thunderous crowd-pleaser “Make Some Noise”, to the full-on speed assault of “Mainline”, the band go through their paces with skill. Through in some excellent cover choices like “Fortunate Son” and “Midnight Moses” and you’ve got a set list that keeps fans interested from start to finish. Better, the band keeps it lean and squarely about the music – there’s no time for extended solos or messing about (with the sole exception of the amusing “Band Intros”).
Quite simply, The Dead Daisies are live band par excellence; there are few that can touch them in this regard. This album is the proof. If you haven’t had a chance to catch them on tour, be sure to check out this album (and DVD!), and if you have, this a great way to capture the memories.
