Hailing from Greece’s, Ectoplasma is a newer band with an old school Death Metal sound in the vein of Autopsy and Avulsed and even a bit of old Hypocrisy. They’ve been busy since their inception in 2013. With one demo, one split LP, and one full length album under their belts, they are now spewing the sickness that is the SKELETAL LIFEFORMS EP upon us! I love a good Death Metal EP, so let’s see what these guys have to offer.

The 5 song EP is quite varied with good basic brutal song structures. “Human Taxidermy” is fast and pummeling with chugging guitars and hammering drums and it only clocks in at 1 min! Vocals are guttural but understandable with some range. Title track “Skeletal Lifeforms” is more mid paced and ghastly, good sense of dread and cool solo at the end. The riffing in “Slain Meat for the Beast” has a Chris Barnes era Cannibal Corpse feel and is pretty savage. Definitely would be a good mosh song. “Awakened in the Coffin” builds from plodding to shredding and is the most complex song on the album, but nothing here is overly technical, just brutal. Closing out the EP is a great cover of Demigod’s “Towards the Shrouded Infinity”, it does the original justice while making it a little more grotesque.

The sure sign of a great EP is that you are hungry for more when it is done, and that’s how I feel every time I listen to SKELETAL LIFEFORMS! Recommended for fans of extreme metal, especially old school deathmetallers.
