2015, Eagle Rock Ent.
Rating: 5

The end of Rory Gallagher’s Taste is released on video for the first time courtesy of Eagle Rock Entertainment. This 1970 show from the infamous Isle Of Wight Festival was considered by many guitarists and musicians as a career hi-light. Being a casual Gallagher fan this is my first time hearing a live Taste show.

This Blu-Ray is more than just your average concert film. There is footage apart from live such as  interviews and the band story making it an essential piece for all fans of Rory. Hearing the story of Taste and how a band with only two studio albums had such an impact on the likes of Bob Geldof and Brian May. An interesting tidbit of info from the film was that May was so influenced by Taste he copied Gallagher’s setup to give him that distinct sound he has to this day.

The live concert portion is a prime example of a product of it’s time. As you’d expect it looks like it is from 1970. It’s glistening moment is the main feature, the performance. Rory and Taste are on fire. They are tight as can be, yet loose enough to inject the spontaneity so it doesn’t come off as going through the motions. This is a fun and interesting watch. While you watch the performance you really appreciate the musicianship from all of the band members and it doesn’t take long to realize why people like Geldof and The Edge look to this performance a pinnacle moment in time.

While Taste were not a ‘Hits’ band and quite possibly rarely heard on radio they were a musicians band that a broad spectrum of people enjoyed. Everyone from guitarists and musicians to Blues guys to Rock and Rollers. They covered it with ease.

WHAT’S GOING ON is essential for any Rory Gallagher fan as well as for Blues Rock aficionados. It is disc that you will put on time and time again, especially if you want to sit back with a nice glass of Jameson and relax.
