After perversely closing the New Blood Stage down for Saturday night with their 30 minute set of nasty noise, we spoke to Victorian Whore Dogs vocalist Danny Page about playing Bloodstock Open Air, British humour and being a workaholic.

You played last night, how did it go?

It was incredible; it was like nothing we could have ever really imagined- it was such a great turnout. It was jammed packed, we had people in dresses, mostly men, some women in not a lot of clothes, which was good- lots of masturbating, lots of gyrating, it was good fun!

You were clashing with Opeth, but they have quite a different following, so did it work out well for you actually?

Yeah it did! At first, before we started we were like “oh, all our mates are here” and then we all kind of turned around and started playing and it was packed. I mean some people left obviously after they’d watched ten minutes of us to go and see Opeth but I don’t blame them to be honest, it’s nice enough having them check us out. I was a little bit intimated about the clash with Opeth, but as you say, very different style, and because we were so near to the main stage it was nice, we had people watch us from outside the tent which was cool. Anyone that liked it, we can’t really complain.

So it was a really good crowd reaction?

Yeah it was great. We had so many old friends there and new faces, and loads of people bought our stuff afterwards, we’ve seen loads of t-shirts about. It’s great to see- loving it.

So the band has been going for 5 years, in terms of albums and releases where are you?

We’ve had two EPs out already, I’ve not been in the band as long as the rest of them, I’ve only been in the band about three years but we had two EPs out in that time, Fetch and Hobo Chic. We are going to record our debut album which is due in September. And then we are going to do a tour with Morass Of Molasses, they’re recording at the same time so we’re doing a kind of co-tour, try to get most of the country done, go to places we haven’t been before like Plymouth and we haven’t been as far as Glasgow before so I want to try and get up there. I’ll be there in February for Satanic Warmaster anyway.victorian whore dogs 2

So who comes up with the names and titles such as “Too Ugly to Prostitute” and Victorian Whore Dogs?

Well the “Too Ugly to Prostitute” thing was our bassist Andy, it kind of came up after a Google search. He actually saw it on a picture of a homeless man who had it on a plaque, he had a really big smile on his face and it was all really quite funny which is kind of what we’re about, it’s kind of black comedy. The Victorian Whore Dogs name came from Chris Morris’s Brass Eye, he did an episode called pets where they were talking about fake history and he was talking about London’s many Victorian Whore Dogs, and that’s kind of where the name came from. We love Chris Morris’s stuff and that very dark, very British humour, and that kind of sums our band up really, we like very British sludge like Iron Monkey who we love and bands like Napalm Death where it’s really heavy but there’s still some humour in the band.

It’s not taken too seriously…

Yeah, they take their music seriously but not themselves, and even though I kind of like bands where it’s all very serious, it’s an act whatever it is. We try to have a good laugh in this band, we want to make a lot of fucking noise.

You play in so many bands yourself and you also run Hibernacula Records as well, do you really like to keep yourself busy?

Yeah I’m just a workaholic really. I mean I love being able to do stuff with Exquisite Ending, I love being able to do stuff with Whore Dogs because its like different audiences and people and so many different genres, I just love playing music, man, it’s just what I like doing. And then the label is even better because it brings everything together and maybe like we’re selling our shirts and we’re friends with maybe guys who are in a black metal band and there’s like a mix. And people get in bands together and do mixes of the two, experimental stuff, it’s cool. Everyone’s getting friendly with each other and maybe, hopefully we do like a day where we mix the two together and try and do something.

Yeah that would be great…

It seems kind off odd to be that cliquey. In some respects a whole black metal day or a whole doom metal day can be kind of fun but I want it to be all in, I mean everything’s fucking different man!

So what’s next for you guys have you got any gigs coming up?

Yeah we’re straight back into rehearsing as soon as we get back on Tuesday, we’ve got a couple of gigs lined up in August, the big one being we are playing with Swamp Fest with Morass Of Molasses headlining and bands that are in the kind of stonery/sludge scene and then we are also playing an airsoft weekend, we are going to be going off to play as like a festival while people shoot us with BB guns (laughs).

I was going to say, do you play while people are shooting their BB guns?

I hope so, that would be hilarious! I’d be like, “this my battle wound, man”. It will be hilarious; we’ll play for anyone we can.

Thanks for your time…

Thanks for giving me time!

Is there anything you want to say to our readers or to the people who saw you last night?

For the people who saw us last night, I’m sorry for rigorously masturbating and throwing condoms at you, erm, I’ll find you later. For everyone else – peace and love and hug a stranger.
