From Hell’s Heart:
Top 5 current metal drummers
Drummers are the driving force of the metal engine. As most focus is on a band’s front-person, we thought it would be nice to look at the skin-pounders and round up a list of our favs. For our purposes this time, the constraint is that they have to be a drummer that is currently active in METAL….that means the drummer has to actually still play in a current recording/touring metal band! We asked our staff to try and not make it a list of their top 5 fav bands, and to actually think about what they believe great drumming to be. It’s doubtful that everyone’s top 5 bands actually contain the best drummers…it’s possible, if you’re a drummer and listen to bands based on deadly drumming. Otherwise, each staffers list focuses on great drummers, regardless of the band(s) they are in.
The Top 5
1. Gene Hoglan (Testament, ex-Death / Dark Angel / Strapping Young Lad /etc etc etc…)
Gene Hoglan easily took the #1 spot in our list. He was the drummer most listed in our individual lists and is very highly respected in the metal world. Known as “The Atomic Clock”, Hoglan needs no introduction as every metalhead has to have at least an album or two that he has played on. For more info info on the man, check out this interview with Gene from a couple years back.
2. Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden)
The man who has influenced just about every metal drummer there is, was also easily placed into the top list. Perhaps the most interesting element of his style is the way he uses one foot to play/mimic double bass. Nicko joined the mighty Iron Maiden in 1982 and has been with them ever since.
3. Vinny Appice
We all know Vinny from his drumming with Dio, Black Sabbath, and Heaven & Hell. More recently he’s been drumming in WAMI (White Appice Mendoza Iggy).
4. Charlie Benante (Anthrax)
Double kicks and blast beats were popularized and something that Charlie helped pioneer in metal. Some say he invented the blast beat! He’s been with Anthrax since 1983 and we have faith he’ll be there for many more years kicking ass.
5. Robb Reiner (Anvil)
Robb has always been under-rated as a drummer. He is clearly the most gifted musician in Anvil and could have went onto things bigger than Anvil. But hey, his loyalty to Anvil and his metal brother “Lips” is commendable!
