Concept albums are something many serious listeners geek out over. When the music, lyrics, and spoken word/movie-like sections all blend seamlessly, it can be a magical immersive experience.

We asked our staff to give us their top 5 selections and some thoughts on them. Check out the results below.

The Top 5

These are the the items from our staff lists that many of us had. These are not in any scientifically accurate order but are representative of the contents of each list.

1. Queensryche – Operation:Mindcrime (1988)

Queensryche – Operation:Mindcrime

Operation:Mindcrime is easily the best Queensryche album. It defined the band and set them apart from other metal bands in the late 80’s. The album was highly placed in a number of our staff lists so its placement as #1 was justified. Even the videos from this album were brilliant in helping tell the story!

More than a side-project, Avantasia quickly took on a life all its own that is every bit as vital as the mainman’s primary band, Edguy. Details on the storyline are summarized here.
