Tour Poster – Decibel Magazine

When you think of old school death metal and grindcore, who are 3 bands that immediately come to mind? What if Decibel Magazine decided to put a tour together with these 3 bands? You’d have to be fucking dreaming, right? WRONG! Decibel has grouped the best known death metal band on the planet, Cannibal Corpse, with the fathers of grind, Napalm Death and New York death metal legends Immolation to kick your fucking asses! BRING IT! It’s mosh pit time!

Tonight’s show is at the Union Transfer, a newer concert venue in Philadelphia. This place used to be a restaurant called the Spaghetti Warehouse, go figure. This was my first time in the place and I really dug it. Stage was large with NO BARRIER so stage dive until your blackened hearts are content! Floor had plenty of pit space and on the sides were two elevated enclosed areas for folks who would rather not be in the line of fire. There was also a large horseshoe shaped balcony above. I think the place held about 600 people, sound quality was good and loud.

Immolation – Ross Dolan

Hailing from Yonkers, New York, the mighty Immolation was up first. Before their set, I got to meet vocalist / bassist Ross Dolan at the merch booth, great guy, very friendly and down to earth. Ross and his bandmates Robert Vigna (guitar), Bill Taylor (guitar) and Steve Shalaty (drums) took the stage at 8:15 and crushed us with the brutal title track from their killer new album KINDOM OF CONSPIRACY! Sound was tight with brutal riffs and intricate solos from Robert. Ross’s voice was impressively deep, similar to how he sounds on recent albums like MAJESTY AND DECAY. Steve’s drumming was ordinary and it became obvious to me that some of the ultra-fast drumming on the recent albums were created by trigger effects. Steve Asheim of Deicide he ain’t. Robert was very animated onstage trying to stoke up the crowd, which didn’t take much coaxing. Crowd response was frenzied for all of the material, including the 4 new tracks. Best songs included “Bound to Order” (FEAR, DOMINANCE AND CONTROL!!), “Majesty and Decay”, the old “Dawn of Possession” (CHRIST POSSESSED, crazy pit time!), “Father, You’re Not a Father” and “Kingdom of Conspiracy”. Set was short and I would have liked more old stuff (WHAT? NOTHING OFF OF HERE IN AFTER?), but it was a perfect 40 minutes of brutality to prime us for what was to come. All death metallers should pick up a copy of KINGDOM OF CONSPIRACY if you haven’t already, you won’t be disappointed!

Napalm Death – Mitch Harris, Danny Herrera, Barney Greenway

Grindcore gods Napalm Death took the stage next and utter chaos ensued as they fucking hammered us! I saw Napalm at Maryland Deathfest last year and I was unhappy with Barney’s vocals. Now that I’ve gotten used to the change my eyes have been opened to the fact that Napalm is truly one of the best live metal acts in the universe! It’s like watching a fucking demolition up there! Frontman Barney Greenway may not sound as deathy as he used to on HARMONY CORRUPTION, but he makes up for it with unbridled energy and intense vocal delivery. If you are a crust punk fan Barney’s style is right up your alley. He is constantly moving, grinding, and moshing up there, fun to watch but hard to photograph! Mitch Harris cranks out the ugly grindcore riffs and delivers awesome gaia screams while Shane Embury and Danny Herrera handle the blast beats and bludgeoning! It’s a fucking sonic vortex people! Crowd response was that of the berserker rage variety with hardcore moshing, headbanging, and more stage diving than I have ever seen anywhere! HOLY SHIT!

Set was a great mix of old and new material, with my favorites being “Pride Assassin” (from the MASS APPEAL MADNESS EP), “Suffer The Children” (which Barney introduced as “flushing organized religion garbage down the fucking toilet!), “If The Truth Be Known” (WHY SHOULD WE RETREAT? TO SATISFY YOUR GAIN?), and the crushing closer, “Siege of Power” (YOU’RE BORN TO SUFFER! YOU’RE GOING TO DIE! RRRRAAAAAYYYY!). “Suffer The Children” produced the largest circle pit of the night and no one on the floor was safe from the carnage! Napalm Death’s performance was the best of the night, and that’s saying something because Cannibal fucking slayed! (more on that below). After the hour long set I was a bit banged up and winded but thrilled at the same time, ready for Cannibal!

Cannibal Corpse – Corpsegrinder, Pat O’ Brien

Cannibal Corpse started their butchering of the audience with the old “A Skull Full of Maggots” from EATEN BACK TO LIFE. It’s the 25th anniversary for these gore soaked metal madmen, and they show no signs of slowing down! The sound was death metal perfection: George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher’s ghastly mid-range growl and high pitched screams (MAGGOTS!), Alex Webster’s precise bass picking, Rob Barrett and Pat O’Brien’s killer riffs and solos, and Paul Mazurkiewicz’s blast beats! The crowd showed their approval by instantly going ape-shit moshing, headbanging and stage diving!

Cannibal Corpse – Alex Webster

It cannot be overstated that, with apologies to pre-neck surgery Tom Araya, Corpsegrinder is the best headbanger of all time. I don’t know how he is able to spin his noggin around and around, up and down, night in and night out without collapsing from exhaustion and dizziness. Corpsgrinder is an amazing frontman and I think he is a fucking riot. Early in the show, he appreciated the fan reaction, saying the only thing he loved more than the roar of the crowd was PUSSY. He followed that up by saying here’s a song (“Addicted to Vaginal Skin”) about that, but it’s about cutting them up and throwing them away when you’re done! About 7 songs into the set, Corpsegrinder got mad at the stage divers who were bumping into him and kicking the monitors on the stage. He warned them to knock it off or they were going to get a club sandwich in their fucking skulls; then broke into the appropriate “Demented Aggression”! The fans obeyed and later in the set Corpsegrinder said you made me mad earlier and you damn well deserved it, but you made up for it so we’re friends again!

Cannibal Corpse – Rob Barrett

The set contained at least 1 song from each Cannibal Corpse album which was very cool, and we got some fucking brutal performances! My favorites of the night included “Staring Through the Eyes of the Dead” (HELP ME- I’M NOT DEAD!), the aforementioned “Addicted to Vaginal Skin”(sick TOMB OF THE MUTILIATED track, my fave CC album), “Sentenced to Burn”, “Gutted” (old BUTCHERED AT BIRTH gore!), “Scourge of Iron” (sssslloow grinding and heavy), “Disfigured”(VILE is a great album! I SKIN MYSELF ALIVE!), “Dormant Bodies Bursting” (blistering speed!), “Decency Defied” (IT BECOMES MY LEATHER!), “I Cum Blood” (I PISSED IN HER MAGGOT FILLED ASSHOLE!), “Encased in Concrete”, and the old classic “Hammer Smashed Face”, during which Corpsegrinder asked for real men slamming in the pit so we delivered a rabid circle pit where a bunch of moshers fell in succession like dominoes! Gonna feel that in the morning!

Cannibal Corpse – Paul Mazurkiewicz, Alex Webster

Late in the set Corpsegrinder dedicated the tour to Slayer’s Jeff Hanneman; the metal community is still in shock after his passing in April. Final song was “Stripped, Raped, and Strangled” which sounded great as we did our final mosh of the evening, emptying our buckets. 90 minutes of pure brutal death metal, we all left blown away, proudly wearing our badges of honor! Overall one of the best metal tours of 2013 and certainly the most brutal! Thank you Decibel Magazine for putting this death metal juggernaut together! These bands are all masters of the death metal / grindcore craft, catch them live when you can and prepare to be POUNDED INTO DUST!
