The New York death metal / grindcore scene is always brutal! With a history of bands like Suffocation, Immolation, Mortician, Brutal Truth, and Pyrexia, I am not going to expect any “melodic death metal” from New York. Malignancy has been around for 20 years, but I had never heard any of their material until EUGENICS, their third full length album which was released on Willowtip Records in 2012. Had I been missing something good and brutal here folks? Absolutely! If you like your brutal death metal with some technicality, EUGENICS is for you!
EUGENICS is a mix of brutal death metal and grindcore. It has a bit of an Exhumed feel. Danny Nelson’s vocals range from subhuman low al a Carcass’ Bill Steer to high pitched like Brutal Truth’s Danny Lilker. The riffing is chaotic and dissonant while the rhythms grind along nicely. Mike Heller’s drumming is solid and the album is full of blast beats. My only complaint is the album is a bit redundant, but if you are in the mood for something brutal this should fit the bill. The best tracks are “Cataclysmic Euphoria” which features an cool build up before exploding, “Separatists” with impressive solos and tempo changes, “The Breach” (great riffs), and “Monstrous Indifference” (balls to the wall grindcore).
If you like any of the NY bands I mentioned in the first paragraph, check out Malignancy, it will be up your alley!
