When you think of heavy metal in Europe, you instantly think of Germany, home of the Wacken Open Air Festival and great thrash and death metal. Obscenity, one of Germany’s oldest death metal bands, is now unleashing ATROPHIED IN ANGUISH on the metal underground. It is their 8th full length album. Although I consider myself something of an old school death metal expert, I have never heard Obscenity before so this is my first exposure to this band. ATROPHIED IN ANGUISH is solid old school death metal with some thrash undertones, a good moshing time for death metallers.

Overall the album has elements of Sinister, Deicide, old Hypocrisy, and Malevolent Creation, which means I dug it! The album starts off with dissonant, strange riffing, double bass drumming, and generic brutal but understandable vocals. The aural attack is frenzied at times, turning melodic on occasion. “Erase the Divine” is mostly straight forward melt your face brutal with a catchy chorus. “All You Can Kill” continues the assault but also features some thrashy solos and the chorus evoked Malevolent Creation. The melodic thrash interludes in tracks like “Perfect Pain” and “Swine to the Slaughter” are quite good and compliment the old school death approach well. “Neurotic Frenzy”, another standout track, has some thrash style riffing and a good groove. Production is good, everything is clear and precise.

There is nothing original here, but fans of the genre will enjoy this. Recommended.
