Let me say this at first: Sargon, this 3-piece thrash/death metal institute from Phoenix, AZ (originally from Panama City), really kicks ass! And I mean it, they really do!
IN CONTEMPT, that is the debut full-length studio album from them – containing 8 tracks altogether, really took me by surprise, in a good way! Frank, who´s responsible for writing both the lyrics and the music for this record, I must confess he has done a great job indeed – besides proving to be quite a top-notch guitar shredder and convincing vocalist as well.
As for the songs, in my opinion the band has found a nice balance between an aggressive and melodic thrash/death metal style. Somehow they remind me of the early Gothenburg movement musically, in which blackened thrash/death metal style was wrapped around more melodic parts – kind of like the way such Swedish powerhouses as Sacrilege and Naglfar did it back in the day, but with the main emphasis being on thrash metal most of the time though. IN CONTEMPT is content-wise, a fair reminiscent from those times – uniting ferociousness of blackened thrash/death metal with catchy melodies that hark very familiarly back to the mid 90s Gothenburg scene.
Having no less than Alex Marquez (ex-Malevolent Creation, Solstice, etc.) on drums – and Edgar Candanedo filling up bass player´s duties in the lineup of Sargon, the band seems to have a chemistry that works incredibly well for the benefits of everybody involved in the band. They sound tight and well rehearsed, really hitting home with such ass-kickers as “The Hunger”, “Crestfallen” and especially with the last “Thrash n´ Roll”, which basically sums up perfectly Sargon´s way of thinking about why this band exists in the first place. They want to thrash and roll – and do it credibly while dropping some jaws by sheer amazement of their skills.
What amazes me they are still without a record contract even if they surely bang more heads than the NHL-player Jarkko Ruutu does in games in the ranks of the Anaheim Ducks. I suppose that´s about to change once the right person(-s) get a chance to hear the band´s excellent debut album. Keeping my fingers crossed that will happen soon for them ´coz Sargon deserve to be heard more widely than they obviously do nowadays. Support this killer quality metal act from Phoenix, AZ – now and every one of you!
