Nik Kahl is the drummer for the German modern metal act My Inner Burning. He and I sat down for a chat where we talked about the band and their debut album and if there was any fear of being categorized as being another one of “those goth band with female vocals” and much more.
Hello, I hope you’re ready to take on this interview with me and metal-rules.com?
Yes, of course. It’s a pleasure for us!
Should we start off with talking a bit about your brand new debut album S/T that has been out for a while now, when and where did you record it and how long did it take?
We recorded the whole album in May/June 2009 in Osterode/Germany at the “Metalsound Studio” of our guitarist Sauer.
Who is writing the material in the band and what are the lyrics about?
The main part of song writing is taken by Becky and Sauer. The lyrics tell stories about by life. – Love & pain, hate & happiness.
Are all of the songs on the album new or have you featured any older songs or demo songs?
Well, it’s the first album, so you could say that every song is a new one.
Were there many songs that didn’t made it on to the final edition of the album?
No, just two or three.
Is it correct that you recorded the album without any help from a label?
Yes, we did!
Who has done the cover art-work and what do you think of it?
The cover and artwork was done by Mr. Russ Okon, from the USA.
How would you like to describe what kind of music My Inner Burning plays?
“Diversified metal with low tuned guitars meets female vocals sung powerful and sometimes sweet and soft like a breeze. Groovy rhythms meet catchy tunes that just won’t leave your ear.”
Are there any plans on shooting a video to any of the songs?
No. At this time we’re recording our new album, which will be released in March 2011 by SPV/Steamhammer!
Have you read any reviews of the album in press, what does the media think of the album?
Yes, there are many reviews in different magazines and webzines.
They’re very positive and of course we’re happy about it!
It sounds like you used a lot of keyboard in your songs but no one is listed on keyboards why?
Well, there is no more place in the tourbus for an instrument that looks like a fence! 😉
No, just kidding. We don’t have a tourbus… ;-P
Sauer is programming all of the sounds in the studio.
When you’re playing live who’s behind the keyboard or do you use backtrack?
We’re using backtracks.
You use two singers, one signs clean vocals and one growls, how did you come up with that idea?
When we recorded the clean vocals of Becky, we thought it might be a good addiction to our music. We tried it, Deibl sang some growls and we had a blast!
I think that female singer Backy really has an amazing voice have she taken vocal classes or is she a natural born talent?
No, Becky has never taken any lessons or classes. She’s a just a great talented singer!
Aren’t you scared of being put in the same genre as Leave’s Eyes, Sirenia and After Forever just because you also have a female on vocals?
No, we’re not!
From what I have read did it only take you about 2 months to record the album, how come it took you so short amount of time?
We are working very hard and concentrated so it doesn’t take that much time to record an album. But it actually didn’t even take 2 months (that´s a lot of time if you´re well prepared.)
In which studio have you recorded the album and where is the studio located?
We recorded at the “Metalsound Studio” of our guitarist “Sauer” – The studio is located in Osterode am Harz/Germany.
Have any other well known acts recorded in that studio?
Not yet. It’s just a small one where most of the time unknown acts with not much money record. But he wouldn’t refuse if Metallica would ask for an album production. 😉
Who has mixed and mastered the album?
The album is mixed and mastered by Sauer too.
What do the rest of the band thinks of his job?
We all think, he does a great job!
Do you think that he’s gonna continue to mix and master your upcoming albums?
Yes, we think so.
Was it hard for you to land a records deal?
It’s always hard to get a record deal! But if you really want it and work hard for it you can always achieve what you want.
Were there many labels that were interested in signing you?
We got some offers from smaller labels which we refused to sign because their offers were really bad. Some other bigger companies were quite interested but in the end they didn’t offer us a contract.
How come you inked a deal with your current label SAOL/H’art?
Well, meanwhile we left SAOL/H’Art… Our next album will be released by SPV/Steamhammer!
Are you happy with the work the album have put into the album and into the band?
Yes of course!
Are you co-operating with any promotion or management agency?
No, up til now we’re doing it all by ourselves.
Are you happy with their work?
I’m very happy with the work of my band mates 😉
Is the album released world wide today? Is it SAOL/H’art that distributes your album outside Germany?
Not quite sure about that but at least you can download the album on amazon, itunes, napster, etc. all around the world.
When and where was My Inner Burning founded and who is the founder?
The band was found by Sauer and me. We know each other from former bands and wanted to start something new. Sauer wrote some songs, we recorded them at his studio and searched for a second guitarist and a bassist. After a short time of looking for them, we met Deibl and Cliff. They were the perfect gain for the band and the music!
The search for a singer was much more difficult. But in the end we got Becky and now we’re the luckiest guys ever to work with this great person and voice
Have you had a solid line-up since then?
Was it given from the start that you were gonna play this kind of music and that you were gonna have a female on vocals?
From the first day we heard Becky’s voice, we were convinced and no other choice to have this one!
Was it hard to find the right vocals for the band?
Yes! We had a lot of castings for a singer. There were guys from America, who wanted to sing – but Becky made it! 😉
Have you recorded any demo before you recorded the album?
Yes, we did.
How many songs were there on the demo and what was it called?
It was called “Fuck You All” (:-D) and included five songs.
I know that you had a different band name from the beginning what was that and why did you change it?
First we were “The Core” but did you ever ask Google for “The Core”?… There are too many bands with that name.
Furthermore “The Core” doesn’t describe our music enough.
Have you toured outside Germany yet?
Yes, in February’10 we had a headliner tour in Greece!
Does all of the members live near each other like I mean in the same city?
No. There are distances from 50km to 100km.
Does the member have any common musical influence or idol that they look up to or are inspired by?
Yes of course! Every musician all over this world has influences and idols.
Idols for me are Mike Portnoy (ex Dream Theater), Simon Phillipps (Toto), Joey (All Ends) and some other great drummers
But I don’t know the Idols of my band mates.
I think, Becky likes the Dixie Chicks.
And Idol for Cliff could be … hm… Harald Juhnke (a German, and much drinking, artist – R.I.P.)?
Do you have a loyal fanbase in Germany?
Well, we’re a very new and young band, so we don’t have a huge fanbase but it is growing more and more. And of course there are some guys, who like our music very much!
Are any of the members involved or a part of any other band or projects besides My Inner Burning?
Yes! Deibl and Cliff have another band called “Loraine” and I play in the bands “Cast In Silence” and “Mina Harker” but the main focus for each of us is My Inner Burning.
How has the summer been for My Inner Burning, have you done any shows or festival gigs this past summer?
The summer was great! We played some festivals with bands like Doro Pesch, Sonic Syndicate, Equilibrium, Overkill, and many more.
Do you have any plans on going out on a longer European tour in the near future?
We are working on it but still have to do some negotiations with different booking agencies. Depending on what the label is willing to invest in us we definitely will be doing a tour after the release of our new album in March 2011.
I know that you did re-record three of your songs in an acoustical version earlier this year is these songs avaliable on MySpace?
Yes! You can listen to the full-length versions on Myspace!
How come you did an acoustical version of these three songs are you gonna released them as bonus tracks or what?
No. When we were looking for a label, we arranged some of our songs to an acoustic set. Then we went to each label and played some of our songs directly in their office. But we think these versions are pretty cool and so we wanted to show them to the fans!
Are the band active on MySpace and Facebook?
Yes we are.
Are you currently working on any new material?
Yes, we are. The new album will be released in March 2011 by SPV/Steamhammer.
When can we expect to find the next My Inner Burning album out in stores?
In March 2011…
Could you give the readers three reasons why they should buy your debut album?
It’s handmade metal, written and recorded by My Inner Burning. The songs will give you a blast! And, of course, our singer is much more beautiful than Lemmy and Kerry King together! 😉
Well, that was all for me for this time, I thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview and I wish you all the best in the future. Do you have any words of wisdom to share with the fans and readers?
Stay tuned, heavy Christmas and don’t eat that yellow snow where the huskies go…!
