Baltimore’s Misery Index gets progressively better with each new release. As amazing as 2008’s TRAITORS was, the band’s latest platter of socio-polictical death/grind, HEIRS TO THIEVERY will raze your town like King Kong and Godzilla on an all night bender. This album is brutal perfection from start to finish. Not only is it Misery Index’s best effort yet, this is possibly one of the best albums of 2010 period.
For the uninitiated, Misery Index combines the concentrated grind intensity of Napalm Death with the musical proficiency of death metal’s most frantic technical monarchs. If you’re familiar with previous releases from the quartet, HEIRS TO THIEVERY sounds like the next logical step in the band’s evolution – better production and tighter performances, but ultimately the same Misery Index that you’ve come to know and love. But the focus and attention cast upon the 11 songs here is what sets this release apart from the glut of other extreme releases on the market now.
Each song feeds into the next like a stack of dominoes, which creates a brilliant level of continuity throughout the album. From the blazing spasms of “Embracing Extinction” to the kinetic energy of “Fed to the Wolves” to impending doom of “The Carrion Call,” HEIRS TO THIEVERY doesn’t stop to breathe for a moment. Songs like “The Illuminaught” with its pulsating riffs and sweep picking stand out as modern grind classics, as does the military dirge of “The Seventh Calvary” and percussion heavy apocalypse of “Sleeping Giants.”
HEIRS TO THIEVERY blasts by in a little over 30-minutes, focusing more on the quality than quantity and is cognizant to not outstay its welcome. It’s the perfect run-time for the perfect collection of grinding metal. I’ve been indulging in HEIRS TO THIEVERY since its release in May, but have been hesitant to write a review as I didn’t think I could do an album this good justice. Point blank – Misery Index rule, and so does HEIRS TO THIEVERY. Undeniably one of the best extreme releases of 2010, don’t let this one slip under your radar.
