Grady – Good As Dead

Good As Dead

2009, C12 Records

Rating: 4.5/5

Gordie Johnson is back with the 3rd release under the Grady moniker. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Grady or Gordie Johnson may remember his previous band: Big Sugar. Grady is very similar to Big Sugar just slightly stripped down but still cranking out great hits with that signature guitar sound.

From the first note of “Whatchewdid” to the last  one of “I’m A Sinner Too” you get eleven of the best songs you will hear all year. GOOD AS DEAD is easily one of the Top Albums of 2009, hands down. With songs like the emotional “Whiskey River” and the more up-tempo “Truckstop In LaGrange” which pays a little homage to ZZ Top. These are just two of the fine songs on here. As with his previous (Big Sugar), Gordie composes a song that is about his native country Canada. This time it is “Alberta Bones”. Lyrically it is similar to Big Sugar’s “All Hell For A Basement” which is about Alberta as well as Newfoundland.

Every song is a winner on GOOD AS DEAD. Can Gordie do any wrong? It sure as hell don’t seem like it as every release is excellent. Grab a damn good cup of coffee and enjoy this album.
