MetalCamp 2009 – Tolmin, Slovenia, 02/07/2009 – 08/07/2009

Spread the metal:

HannTu: Belphegor are a fun band to watch when you’re in the mood for them. They’re heavy and brutal, and undeniably put on a great show. However, after the first few songs, I found myself tiring of watching them. Perhaps it was the touch of flu that I was harbouring. More likely it was just plain old fatigue; after you’ve been tramping up and down mountains by day and headbanging and singing along to Sodom, Testament and Blind Guardian by night, it’s hard to summon up the energy for a band that I knew I would be seeing at closer quarters in a week’s time at Kaltenbach Open Air. So it was off to the press tent and a beer for me, and to await Satyricon.

HannTu: Satyricon were another of the bands to suffer from Metal Camp’s beautiful yet remote location. Their equipment also did not arrive at the time it was expected to, and thus the band’s scheduled performance at 7.45 pm had to be pushed back to 2 in the morning.

It took a lot of dedication on the parts of both the band themselves to perform and the crowd to rouse themselves after nearly 12 hours of rocking out. That both did, and contributed to a great atmosphere, was wonderful to see!

I have to confess to not being a massive Satyricon fan, or even having heard much of them at all. That being said, I felt I owed it to myself to see them for the first time, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. Satyr is a wonderful frontman, talented, charismatic and very compelling on stage. And their delectable female keyboardist had a quite unique style of headbanging…

The only song I recognised of theirs was ‘Mother North’ but all in all, they put on an amazing show, and thanked the crowd for their stamina and dedication. The crowd responded vociferously in kind.

But my sleeping bag beckons, and my feet and ears are protesting against the abuse they have suffered throughout the day. So goodnight all, until tomorrow…
