For the first time ever, Metal-Rules brings you coverage of the one and only true metal holiday in the world: Metal Camp in Slovenia. Be warned, there’s pages and pages of reviews, press conferences and especially tons of high quality pictures ahead; but what can you expect from a week long festival of sheer awesomeness? Read on, if you dare…

Day 1 (2nd July, Thursday)

Metal Camp 2009 for Trease and I started with a 6 a.m. flight out from London Stansted to Slovenia’s quaint and beautiful capital, Ljubjana. Passing through pine forests and little homesteads from Ljubljana airport, there was a sense of something truly epic brewing in the air.

In four hours on a train from Ljubljana through Jesenice and ending at drizzly Most na Soci/Tolmin, the wonders of the Slovenian countryside were laid bare to our admiring eyes. Rugged, wild and practically untouched, the train wound its way through stunning mountains, brown turgid rivers swollen with valley rain and little towns existing right on the edge of nowhere. Both of us felt a pang of regret that we didn’t have the time to visit Lake Bled this year, a magical lake with a castle on a little island in its middle.

Shuttle bus from Most na Soci to Tolmin and the Metal Camp site…VIP booth for our press passes…pop-up tent in a matter of seconds…and off to the shops for some liquid supplies! With the town of Tolmin and its assorted restaurants and supermarket practically on Metal Camp’s backyard (a five minute walk), this was the most civilised festival experience I’ve ever had yet. Tolmin is near the Italian-Slovenian border, and a lot of the Italian influence manifests itself in the number of pizza places and Italian joints in the town centre.

After a few drinks, it was off to the Beach Bar down by the Soca river for some bloody awful Guitar Hero competitions and some excellent pina coladas to finish the night off. Sipping something vaguely pineapple-y while watching the night mist crawl and roll over the frigid black water, with Megadeth and Pantera blasting at full volume, meeting metalheads from all around the world, and then finally crawling into your tent at four in the morning, drunk as a skunk – this is probably the best (and only) way to start off a festival.

Aaah Metal Camp…The summer vacation for children of a more evil persuasion. A place where metal heads can peel off their putrid Bathory T-shirts, expose their pasty white skin, down a horn full of Lasko beer (perhaps tainted with other bodily fluids we won’t mention here) and dive into the crystal blue waters of Slovenia’s Soca river. For one whole week every year, the picturesque and quaint town of Tolmin becomes Metal Camp. And what a juxtaposition it truly is. Although somehow, with it being my second year here, this feels the norm! The main intersection of the town is thriving with long-haired, black shirted, beer swigging metal heads. My ears are picking up a mix of Metallica, Black Sabbath, Pantera and Death simultaneously as all four restaurants and bars on each corner compete for our custom.

Hann and I choose the quieter street to make our way down to the camping area, via a tent to collect our passes. However, this brief moment of solace is shattered, as we bump into our good friends from Perth, Australia and my friend Kylee informs me that the girl who’d slept with my ex at Wacken last year is in fact here as well.

“Ah who cares”, I tell her. We carry on to set up camp, while dark images of me pouring a beer down her neck, then grabbing a rock and ploughing it into the silly girl’s head begin to penetrate my thoughts.

*Disclaimer: Anyone who knows me will take my previous comment with a grain of salt. No way in hell would I waste a perfectly good beverage!

With ‘Camp Koala’ set up (we’re straight – I swear!) and with a piece of cardboard separating my butt from the mud, we start a pretty epic pre-beach party drinking session with ‘Fruity/Dirty/Slutty Sues’ made for us by our friend from Leeds, Duncan, sporting a rather fetching leopard print blouse.

Yes… we’re straight.
