February 2009

Spread the metal:

New York progressive metal veterans DREAM THEATER will take their Progressive Nation tour back on the road for its second incarnation with a run through America and Canada in July/August 2009.

In addition to a headlining set by DREAM THEATER, this year’s package will feature the outstanding musicianship of ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA as well as two incredibly talented imports from Sweden: PAIN OF SALVATION and BEARDFISH.

Progressive Nation was created by DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy and its successful inaugural run in 2008 also featured OPETH, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME and THREE.

Portnoy once again hand-picked all of the bands for the 2009 bill based on their diversity and musicality. He comments: "This year’s lineup is so exciting for me. Every band is bringing something very unique to the package to create an incredibly well rounded musical experience. I am just as excited to be watching all the bands from the side of the stage as I am to be performing with mine in the center of it!"

Fresh on the heels of his Grammy win, Dweezil Zappa is pleased to announce his plans to join forces with DREAM THEATER as part of the Progressive Nation 2009 tour: "It’s no secret that I started ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA with the intention to diversify and expand the audience for my father’s music. I figured I’d probably have to do it one concert at a time. Playing with DREAM THEATER on the Progressive Nation tour is a great way to accomplish that goal. Music fans who are seeking something to challenge their senses should definitely consider attending this great bill."

Portnoy adds: "It is an absolute honor for me to have ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA on board. Frank Zappa is one of my all-time biggest heroes and his music practically invented the term ‘progressive.’ Dweezil is doing an amazing job carrying on the tradition of his father’s daring spirit and like his dad, has surrounded himself with a band of jaw-dropping, incredible musicians."

Sweden’s PAIN OF SALVATION will bring their unique brand of cutting-edge progressive metal to Progressive Nation. Vocalist/guitarist Daniel Gildenlöw comments: "We are truly very happy to be part of the Progressive Nation tour, and to be back in the States again and bring all the sweat and flesh to our music and our well deserving American fans. We feel honored to have been asked."

Gildenlöw also joked: "Actually, Mike has been on our backs now for two years in what we believe to be a personal campaign, bordering on harassment, to make us come over. So when he asked us about Progressive Nation, it was a joy to finally be able to say yes. And if Mike didn’t give up on us, then hopefully America hasn’t either."

Vocalist/keyboardist Rikard Sjöblom of BEARDFISH is equally excited: "When we read on a website that Mike Portnoy had our album ‘Sleeping in Traffic Part 1’ among his favorite releases of 2007, we just couldn’t believe it and we were really happy about it! And now we once again gasp for air since we’ve been asked to join Progressive Nation 2009 together with DREAM THEATER (one of the biggest bands in this genre today!), PAIN OF SALVATION (hey, fellow Swedes!!!) and ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA (being a HUGE Zappa fan myself, I think this is really cool!). Since we’ve only played the U.S. once before we simply can’t wait to come over and rock out!"

Progressive Nation will be the first North American tour for DREAM THEATER in support of the band’s newest Roadrunner Records CD, which is slated for a June 2009 release.

The Gay Blades Unleash "O Shot" Music Video via NME.com

NYC Trash Pop duo The Gay Blades are adding to their ever growing collection of insanity stricken videos (see "Free Scary Rides"

on the band’s MySpace) with a proper video for "O Shot", the first single off their debut record Ghosts. Having premiered on NME.com, and featured by music mavens TheTripwire.com, the absurd if not brilliant narrative directed by Chell Stephen (Gregory & The Hawk, Loverless), is set to make its television debut on MTV2’s Subterranean Thursday at 1 AM EST! See the video here: (Insert Tripwire link)

In preparation for the UK release of Ghosts on the London based label Something In Construction (Air France, Loney Dear), The Gay Blades will head to the frigid British streets next week for a string of shows and promo which include appearances with The Spinto Band and a very special NME BRATS show with Tricky. UK indie rock bible NME has recently championed the band in a full page article citing "…The Gay Blades are always packing the kind of natural wit and bravado that most Big Apple hipsters couldn’t learn even with regular classes from Bill Hicks."

NME.com is currently hosting an exclusive free download of the band’s saloon stomper "Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream".

See below for an updated tour schedule including the band’s trip to this year’s SXSW!! The recent live session on Sirius XMU Blog Radio has accompanying video where the band’s swagger injected and guitar slinging live show can be checked out: www.laundromatinee.com

"If Freddie Mercury sang for Death From Above 1979, these guys would open the show." – CMJ

"These guys are showmen with enough swagger, strut and snark to make the forefathers (Bowie/Mercury) of their genre proud." – MY OLD KENTUCKY BLOG

"There’s something sort of legendary and epic in the way that they can come off as being the equivalent of falling down drunk or high as a kite every single second of the time spent in their company. But they keep it all together when they’re playing their glamorous, punk rock."  – DAYTROTTER

"’Hey She Say’ sounds like Ted Leo’s mod miming if dude didn’t listen to so much Madness. Instead of some ska backbeat and bass winding, The Gay Blades shoot straight for the title of Riff Champions, unwinding their tune with some pasty all-over-the-place shredding." – RCRD LBL

The original line-up of Fred Durst, Wes Borland, Sam Rivers, John Otto, and DJ Lethal are back from an eight year hiatus to bring their world back to ours. Fred Durst and Wes Borland said in a joint statement:

"We decided we were more disgusted and bored with the state of heavy popular music than we were with each other. Regardless of where our separate paths have taken us, we recognize there is a powerful and unique energy with this particular group of people we have not found anywhere else. This is why Limp Bizkit is back."

The guys will kick off a world tour in the Spring on the overseas festival circuit with headline shows sprinkled in throughout Eastern Europe and Europe, selected dates include, in late May, Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic countries where Limp Bizkit has never played before despite huge demand, along with major festivals like Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park in Germany, more dates to be announced shortly. A new album, which would be the original group’s first full-length effort since 2000, is also planned.

Limp Bizkit’s first three albums have sold over 20 million copies in the U.S. alone, and another 13 million in the rest of the world.

New Jersey’s Holler, Wild Rose! Announce Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto Tour Dates

Backlight Records’ post-rock pride and joy, Holler, Wild Rose! will make their third visit to Canada this March stopping in Ottawa (March 12th @ Zaphod’s Beeblebrox), Montreal (March 14th @ Le Divan Orange), and Toronto (March 15th @ The Boat). The 6 member epic rock orchestra has been creating quite the buzz south of the Canadian border. It’s really just a matter of time before Canucks warm up to their sonic Broken Social Scene-esque soundscapes and hometown influenced Boss-like honesty.

Their new music video for "Marylawn Hair" was directed by Holler, Wild Rose! guitarist and NYU Film graduate, Ryan Cheresnick and Holler, Wild Rose! bassist and Montclair State University film student, Scott Vangenderen and features a cameo appearance by Sounds Familyre recording artists Ben & Vesper. The video is sponsored by KODAK who generously donated all of the film for the project and has already been featured on TheMusic.fm and Neufutur Magazine in the states. You can view a high resolution version of the, "Marylawn Hair" video here: vimeo.com/2124901 or on Youtube here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHSG8q4xbY8

Holler, Wild Rose! released their stunning debut album, Our Little Hymnal in September of 2007 to instant critical acclaim. While in regular rotation on over 150 American radio stations (including XM Satellite Radio), it seems Our Little Hymnal managed to attract attention overseas and has been spinning on internet radio stations in the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Germany, and more. To top it all off, FILTER Magazine hand picked the band for March 2008’s Undiscovered Band of the Month feature and Holler, Wild Rose! also were featured on the "BBC Introducing" program hosted by Tom Robinson on BBC 6 in England.

Describing the bands sound is a difficult task, to say the least. Most definitely a product of our times, they find a home between the comforting folk sounds of our past (Jeff Buckley, Bruce Springsteen), throw in some early R&B groove for good measure, and the burgeoning bright neon post-rock of our current and future musical times (Sigur Ros, Do Make Say Think).

"Had The Verve not imploded, and instead hired a Thom Yorke-ophile Jeff Buckley to sing his interpretation of Sigur Rós covering Loveless, you’d have Holler, Wild Rose! Our Little Hymnal creates the dark, almost frighteningly personal, ultimately redemptive atmospherics of a moving black and white art film." – Ted Leibowitz, Bagel Radio

"Lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist John Mosloskie leads this exceptional band through dramatic, melodic twists and turns that will keep you staring — yes, staring — at the speaker to catch what will happen next" – Performing Songwriter Magazine

March 12th @ Zaphod’s Beeblebrox, OTTAWA (with Michou, Amos the Transparent)

March 14th @ Le Divan Orange, MONTREAL (with Broadcast Radio)

March 15th @ The Boat, TORONTO (with Great Lenin’s Ghost, The Paint Movement)

The Secret Handshake New Album Info: "My Name Up In Lights" Out April 21st

The elements that comprise The Secret Handshake’s new album, My Name Up In Lights, aren’t complicated or out of the ordinary. Instead Dallas musician Luis Dubuc has built a collection of songs that embraces an unabashed pop sensibility, drawing on the ‘90s to inspire the disc’s feel-good energy and playful mood. The record follows the success of The Secret Handshake’s previous album—2007’s One Full Year—with more streamlined intent and clarity of vision. “My first record was 14 songs and it was all over the place,” Dubuc says. “It was like looking in my brain. It was full of ideas and all the songs sounded different. This record is really narrowed down. It’s really influenced by Family Matters and Step By Step and the Ninja Turtles and Len and Spacehog and awesome ‘90s radio music. I just narrowed all those influences down and put them into a record.”

Dubuc, who started The Secret Handshake in 2004, began writing songs and compiling demos for a new album as soon as he finished One Full Year, eventually ending up with nearly 60 songs to weed through. Once he had selected the 10 strongest tracks, Dubuc sat down in his home studio to record in December of 2008. Instead of enlisting a producer, like on the last record, Dubuc played, programmed and recorded the entire album himself to ensure that his vision achieved reality. “I wanted to do this record and have it be 100 percent me,” he explains. “I didn’t want anyone else to have input. I wanted to just do it. No one could stop me from doing anything.”

My Name Up In Lights – Tracklisting:

1.) All For You

2.) TGIF

3.) Nothing Can Change That

4.) Little Song

5.) What’s Wrong

6.) Saturday

7.) Make Up Your Mind

9.) Brand New Love

10.) Last Song

Les Claypool To Embark On “The Oddity Faire: A Mutated Mini Fest” Tour

Les Claypool will embark on the “The Oddity Faire: A Mutated Mini Fest” tour and will take over North America starting March 4, 2009. This tour is in support of yet another brilliant work of art, OF FUNGI AND FOE releasing March 17, 2009 on Prawn Song Records.

"OF FUNGI AND FOE" is the expansion of material Claypool has recorded over the past few years for the video game “Mushroom Men” and the motion picture “Pig Hunt”. Being inspired by these 2 projects Claypool decided to keep creating and turn it into an album. The song Mushroom Men on this release is a more in depth version of the theme song from the video game. Additionally a jam session with Gogol Bordello’s charismatic front-man Eugene Hutz turned into the track “Bite Out Of Life”. The band is comprised of Les Claypool on bass/vocals, Paulo Baldi on Drums (Cake), Mike Dillon on Percussion (Ani Difranco), and Sam Bass on Cello (Deadweight).

There are few international keyboardists/composers who enjoy as brilliant a reputation as Derek Sherinian.  He has played with acts such as Kiss, Billy Idol, and Alice Cooper and let’s not forget he was a member of the prog metal powerhouse Dream Theater.  His latest solo release – the sixth to date – is called “Molecular Heinosity” in which he presents along with haunting prog metal compositions, another series of illustrious guests, among them Zakk Wylde, Virgil Donati, and Tony Franklin.  “Why scratch with the turkeys when you can soar with the Eagles,” Sherinian laughs.  “I hand pick the musicians for my albums like a casting agent picks actors for a movie – they are each ideally suited for the role.  I write material that is true to my influences and from the perspective of a listener.  Once I come up with the structure or vibe of a song, I then try to imagine who the ultimate team of players would be for it.  If I know in advance who will be on the track, I always try to compose with them in mind.  I put tremendous effort into writing and arranging my music; it deserves only the world’s best musicians to make it come alive.”

Sherinian belongs to that select group of musicians who look way beyond the limitations of their main instrument and cover a wide range in terms of their craft and compositions.  As the exceptional guitarist John Petrucci, with whom Sherinian worked during his time with Dream Theater, put it so aptly: “Derek is heavily into guitarists and rock music, his history, and the range of all the great guitarists he’s worked with.  He plays with a fire unheard of from most keyboardists.”  In line with this statement, “Molecular Heinosity”, on which drummer Brian Tichy took over the position that had been filled by Simon Phillips, sounds even more gritty and metallic than Sherinian’s previous releases.  “Unfortunately, I was not able to work with Simon Phillips on “Molecular Heinosity”, sometimes schedules do not permit.  The result has less of the jazz fusion influence that Simon brings, and I was forced to lean more towards my metal side.  “Molecular Heinosity” is more focused than my past releases.  This record is more progressive metal.”

Along with world-class guitarists Rusty Cooley and Brett Garsed and the extraordinarily talented Taka Minamino, Zakk Wylde is the most renowned guest on “Molecular Heinosity”, “Zakk and I have been friends for 20 years now.  He has played on my last five solo records.  Zakk always brings in the balls to anything he touches,” Sherinian enthuses.  “Zakk also contributed lyrically to the song ‘;So Far Gone’, he will always have an open invitation to play on my music.”  An offer which Wylde is happy to accept: “It’s amazing we even get any work done because we’re in stitches constantly.  Derek just says ‘Dude, I want you to play a solo over here.’  He tells me he’s got all these amazing musicians coming in, and tells me to just do my thing.  Life is easy – we just play, drink beer and laugh our balls off.  I’m usually passed out on the floor or his couch by the end of the sessions

Celebrating his 10th year as a solo artist, Derek Sherinian continues to push the boundaries in heavy instrumental music.

Trevor Andrew is already internationally recognized as one of the world’s top snowboarders with two Olympic Games and numerous World Cup wins under his belt. And, now, Trevor – a.k.a. Trouble Andrew – is about to conquer the world of music with his debut Trouble Andrew on Virgin Records, which was produced by John Hill/Shitake Monkey (Santogold, Lykke Li) and mixed by Mark Needham (The Killers).

Trouble Andrew is a remixed and remastered edition of his self-released 2007 CD of the same name (previously available only via iTunes) with underground hit “Chase Money” and the addition of one newly recorded song, “What’s So Strange About Me.” Like most rock stars, Trouble was a rebel and dropped out of high school at age 15 to live his dream — literally a pipe dream for a kid coming from the relatively flat Nova Scotia. He is no stranger to the rock star life of winning contests, signing endorsement deals (Burton Snowboards and Oakley to name a few), and gaining rabid fans around the world. He has inspired a generation of snowboard kids with his original freestyle riding and unique signature snowboards and outerwear that have always represented the skateboarding, punk rock, hip-hop, and pop influences of his youth. Trouble’s music tells a similar story with its dark, hard hitting grinding bass and synths and sk8rock guitar riffs and witty and sexually charged lyrics.

One such track is the playful, fast-paced, boasting track that makes the listener feel good to be bad “Bang Bang” featuring Trouble’s fiancé Santi White, better known as Santogold. “She encouraged me to do music,” says Trouble, who began his professional snowboarding career at age 15, but didn’t write his first song until he broke his knee in 2005. “I was recovering from a snowboarding injury and she bought me a 4-track recorder, a Gibson guitar, and a Peavey amp to play around on because she saw me taking an interest.”

After nine months of rehab and a full recovery, the professional snowboarder-turned-musician had Trouble Andrew recorded, a four-piece band, and a whole new sound behind him. That new sound is an amalgamation of the punk, rock, hip-hop, sk8, surf, and snowboard cultures he grew up on. The end result is a poppy electro sk8 punk music with fist pumping anthems, rump-shaking melodies, and sing-along hooks. “It’s like crunkrock pop,” says Trouble.

Other key tracks on Trouble Andrew include “Chase Money,” an anthem song based on materialistic people and “UH OH,” a dark, sexy, song with a slower groove for the ladies. “Young Boy” is one of the artist’s more serious songs, talking about world issues and family trouble with a positive twist, while “Pimp Millennium” is an attitude-laden ditty that makes you feel like going out to pimp the world.”

Trouble is currently writing new songs for the follow-up record to his self-titled CD, which is slated for a summer 2009 release on Virgin Records.

Raise your spirits and your glasses with The Saw Doctors — US TOUR TO BEGIN MARCH 6

Irish super-group, The Saw Doctors arrive Stateside on March 6, 2009 for the first of 12 headlining shows, including two very special St. Patrick’s Day celebration concerts in New York City, at the Nokia Theatre in Times Square, confirmed for March 13/14.  In addition, the band is releasing both a CD and DVD on March 17, 2009 to coincide with the tour.  This annual traveling, St. Patrick’s Day party is fast becoming one of the hotly anticipated tours each year in the US as legions of fans flock to the venues to party with the Saw Doctors.

Cities such as New York, Cleveland, Chicago, Indianapolis, Boston, Philadelphia, Londonderry and others come out in full force to see the band play live.  This year, the band is coming stateside with some fun and interesting news:  a number one UK Chart Topper!  After a gap of 17 years, the West of Ireland rockers topped the Irish Music Singles Chart with their punked up version of the Sugababes song “About You Now“, beating off international artists such as Pink and Kings of Leon.  This phenomenal happening in the long successful career of the Saw Doctors adds even more anticipation for the US dates.

For New York City area fans, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with The Saw Doctors has become an annual tradition.  And this year, on the heels of the band celebrating their 21st year together, is no exception.  They are determined to party in the US and bring smiles to the faces of their fans.  The band knows that their fans may be suffering because of the current economic downturn but they hope to bring a sense of carefree joy and well-being to their audience during this year’s celebratory concerts.

“We’ve been readin’ about your troubles with the economy and we know it’s tough right now, says Davy Carton of the Saw Doctors, “its like that in Ireland too, the only way out is a bit of fun and dancing….and we know that money is short, but come on out and we’ll put the smile right back on your face, at least for the night!”

Press on both sides of the “pond” agree:

"…if they could bottle the sort of bonhomie that can make can entire concert hall feel better, The Saw Doctors would have the medicine show to end them all".      The London Times

“The Saw Doctors sing earnest, folk–rocking anthems of small–town life “for those who feel they’ve been mistreated/Discriminated, robbed or cheated. “  In Ireland their populism has brought them a huge national following; even in New York City, there should be plenty of voices with brogues singing along."   The New York Times

Tickets for all shows are on sale now through all Ticketmaster outlets.

In addition to a great live show, The Saw Doctors are on tour in support of their forthcoming March 17, 2009 release of the new documentary DVD, Clare Island to Cape Cod: The Saw Doctors in Concert and its companion Live CD, Live at the Melody Tent.

The new documentary film Clare Island to Cape Cod: The Saw Doctors in Concert, directed by Steven Lock (David Bowie: An Earthling at 50 Documentary) focuses on the band’s smartly written music and solid rapport with its live audience. It is a combination of creative and fun live performance interspersed with talking and joking that mimics any standup comedian.

Much of the footage on the DVD comes from the August 2008, Cape Cod Melody Tent concert in Hyannis, MA.

Shamtown Records has released a companion Live CD Live at the Melody Tent featuring audio tracks from the filmed concert including the Bands Irish number one, N17 and HAY WRAP. The CD and DVD will be distributed by MRI Distribution in the United States.

The Bride Wore Black

Scream queen Tairrie B and guitarist Mick Murphy of the Los Angeles based hard rock band MY RUIN have tied the knot and rang in the New Year with style. The longtime couple exchanged vows in a private ceremony which took place on Christmas Eve deep in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee close to Micks hometown of Knoxville.

Mick & Tairrie have been together going on 9 years and have released 6 albums with MY RUIN including the full length & DVD ‘Throat Full of Heart’ & ‘Alive on the Other Side’ [live album + DVD] which came out in 2008 on the couple’s own imprint label Rovena Recordings via Cargo Records UK & Redeye USA.

‘After being together for so many years, we felt it was time to make it official and we made the decision to get married when we went home for the holidays in December following our ‘ReligiosiTour’ which took place in the U.K. this past October’. said Mick.

Our wedding was about as UN-Hollywood as it gets except for the fact that the bride wore black and walked down the aisle to Led Zeppelin’s ‘Whole Lotta Love’. We had to add a little rock & roll to the ceremony" said Tairrie B who although no longer ‘Miss B’, plans on keeping her name professionally after taking Micks last name legally.

Tairrie & Mick are currently in the studio recording the follow up to their 2006 release ‘Death Has Become Her’  from the duos spoken word side project known as THE LVRS. The couple plan to release the album ‘Lady Speaks The Bruise’ later this year on their Rovena Recordings label and have posted a new song on the bands my space page titled ‘The Darkwood’ to give listeners a taste of things to come. To check out the recent blog posted on My Ruins myspace page along with wedding photos and a slideshow video, see the link below.

Alternative/Grunge rockers HCE invades the U.S.

HCE delivers to the U.S. a cutting edge originality titled ECHOLAND which will release on Reversed Records March 24th, 2009.

HCE is a trio based in Winnipeg, Canada, featuring Matt Laberge (vocals/guitar) Matthew Powers (drums/vocals) and Roger Arsenault (bass/vocals). With an extremely wide range of musical influences, HCE arrived somewhere between Melvins and Pixies; heavy, noisy and experimental, yet catchy and memorable. The group was founded in 1998 by Laberge and Powers.

The critically acclaimed ECHOLAND was originally released in Canada and was very well received by college radio. The album charted in the top ten albums of the year on Canadian college radio stations. ECHOLAND also caught the attention the film industry with the song Blue Chairs to be featured in an up and coming film by English writer/director Christian Piers Betley (Pale Faces and Stranger Looks, Harry) – the film is titled "Rampage".

HCE has also strengthened their online presence and fan interaction with HCE TV, a series of web-shorts featuring absurd skit comedy, tour silliness and updates from the band. The self-produced music video for the single Satire is set for release in April 2009.

Known for their unpredictable performances, HCE are at home on stage and know how to give the crowd a show to remember. They have a contagious energy that never fails to leave a scar on their audience.

Symphonic Rock’s Erik Norlander, Lana Lane Featured on Multimedia Project Terra Incognita

Symphonic rock’s Erik Norlander and Lana Lane have joined forces with internationally bestselling author Kevin J. Anderson (Dune novels with Brian Herbert, Star Wars and X-Files novels) for a groundbreaking crossover novel and progressive rock recording project titled Terra Incognita. Anderson has created an incredible fantasy universe with sailing ships, sea monsters, and the crusades. Erik Norlander, an accomplished keyboardist/composer and a founding member of progressive rock band Rocket Scientists, joined the project upon its inception to pen the music and produce the recording after a meeting with Anderson and Shawn Gordon of ProgRock Records. Norlander’s wife, Queen of Symphonic Rock Lana Lane, was recruited as the lead female vocalist.

"The ‘Terra Incognita’ project is really the perfect convergence of spirits," affirms Norlander. "I have been a fan of Kevin’s novels for some time, and Kevin enjoys many of the CDs I’ve produced. Normally we would have a hard time collaborating as we really work in different media. But we found a common link in ProgRock Records chief, Shawn Gordon, with whom I have worked for several years as both my label distributor and general comrade-in-arms. Shawn brought us all together for a lunch meeting last year, and that was the catharsis for this excellent project. This is surely a unique exercise in mixed media, and I’m thrilled to be involved."

John Payne (ASIA Featuring John Payne) is featured as a vocalist on the project. Norlander became an official member of ASIA Featuring John Payne at the end of 2007, and has been touring and recording with Payne since that time. A special live performance featuring John Payne and Lana Lane as special guests with Norlander’s Rocket Scientists band is scheduled for Saturday, March 28th at The Winchester in Cleveland, Ohio. www.thewinchester.net

Other Terra Incognita vocalists include James LaBrie (Dream Theater) and Michael Sadler (ex-Saga). Additional musicians include David Ragsdale (Kansas), Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery), Chris Quirarte (Prymary), Kurt Barabas (Under the Sun), and Chris Brown (Ghost Circus) with Shawn Gordon (ProgRock Records) as executive producer. Collectively, this creative team has sold over 40 million units worldwide.

Terra Incognita is a synergistic project unlike anything ever seen in the publishing and music business – an original novel and original CD from the same author. Anderson developed and expanded one of the novel’s storylines to form the basis of an epic rock CD under the band name Roswell Six. He and his wife, bestselling author Rebecca Moesta, wrote all of the lyrics to the songs.

Terra Incognita is available now for pre-sales through ProgRock Records at www.progrockrecords.com/artists/view.php?id=116. The CD will ship in late April and the novel titled Terra Incognita: The Edge of the World by June. Street date for brick and mortar retailers is June 2, 2009. Special bundling and discounted offers will also be available on the ProgRock site along with a limited amount of autographed copies.

Black Water Rising -Announces Debut Album

New York based rockers Black Water Rising have announced an upcoming show in New York in support of their self-titled debut, which will be available April 7, 2009.

Black Water Rising is a collection of soul baring, angst ridden, riff heavy material that is proudly anchored in the foundations of traditional hard rock song writing. Its giant guitar driven monster riffs are served up on a bed of crushing grooves with soaring melodic vocals and big hooks. Basically, NO FRILLS RIFF ROCK!

Lyrically, the message is socially and politically driven by the dark times we live in. With darkness seemingly growing by the day, Black Water Rising is a name that fits this band like a glove.

After releasing two self produced albums nationwide with a band called DUST TO DUST, singer songwriter Rob Traynor locked himself away for two years in his Brooklyn New York recording studio, later emerging with a collection of songs that would become the seeds of Black Water Rising.

Traynor is joined by former BOILER ROOM drummer Mike Meselsohn, former STEREOMUD guitarist Johnny Fattoruso and bassist Oddie McLaughlin.

“After Rob’s last project, he sat down and started writing songs,” says Fattoruso. “Mike was in Boiler Room, which had gone belly up. Rob called him up and said ‘Hey, I’ve got some new stuff, let’s record these songs.

They needed another guitar player, and found me via MySpace. I heard two riffs and said, ‘I’m in!’ Oddie and I were in our first band together back in high school. I had gotten back in touch with him, he was still playing. I brought him down to the studio, introduced him to the other guys. I brought him back three times, but the other guys loved him from the start. We wanted to give him a little test, ha!”

Black Water Rising’s 11-song, self-titled debut has received major play (power rotation) on Sirius’s Satellite Radio’s Octane channel (commercial station) for the song “Brother Go On” and was the #6 album in the Top 20 for October, (the only unsigned band on the chart!) #2 most requested phones and in the Top 20 weekly chart many times. The single has grown legs and is still receiving spins and requests 40 weeks later. The album will be released April 7, 2009.

“It’s got that raw sound,” says Fattoruso. “It’s in your face, no gimmicks, straight-on hard rock/heavy metal, done the classic way. We wanted to get away from the cookie cutter bands, back to where music was fun again.”

“I’m very proud of this album, because I think I have finally captured the sound and style I have heard in my head for years and always wanted to get out,” added Traynor. “I believe BWR will appeal to the Rock and Metal spectrum. This is the type of band that can share a stage with bands like Buckcherry and Disturbed, then play with a Pantera or Slayer.

If you like rock and metal, new or old school, I believe we have you covered. Our fan base demonstrates this. We have the balls, the riffs and the melody to bring it.”

Other commercial radio stations across the country are now starting to spin “Brother Go On” including: KXXR (93X FM) in Minneapolis MN, WKQZ in Saginaw MI, WDHAs’ METAL MANIA (105.5 FM) in NJ who named BWR’s “Living Proof” one of the best new songs of the year! WKILO FM in Colorado Springs CO, WCPR FM in Biloxi Mississippi, WRXP (101.9FM) in NY, WAXQ

(Q104.3) in NY, and many others… all of this without actively working the single to radio!

The band also worked with director Noah Shulman (Soil, The Autumn

Offering) on an MTV-quality music video for their song, “Brother Go On”

which has been getting stellar reviews on Youtube, MySpace and other media sites.

With nearly 50,000 friends on MySpace, mostly from word-of-mouth alone (a lot generated from Sirius Octane), the fan response from around the world has been overwhelmingly positive. Black Water Rising literally gets hundreds of add requests, CD and tour inquires each week and close to 1000+ plays daily on their page!!

“We’re gearing up to get the word out and prepare to release this album." says Traynor. “It has been a great ride thus far, and we are very psyched to take BWR to the next level. We want the world to know about this band, and we intend to make everyone take notice.”

The philosophy of BWR is simple: they are not looking to reinvent the wheel, they just want to give it a much needed alignment in these musically stale times. Enough bullshit! Crank it up, sit back, spark a bat, and let the music tell the rest of the story…

Upcoming tour dates are listed below. Black Water Rising will be playing an additional string of dates this March, as well as the upcoming SXSW Festival in Austin, TX. Stay tuned for more!!

Black Water Rising is:

Rob Traynor – Vocals, Guitar

Johnny Fattoruso – Guitar

Mike Meselsohn – Drums

Oddie McLaughlin – Bass

Black Water Rising tour dates:

2/19 – Brooklyn, NY – The Trash Bar

The Trews continue to solidify their standing as one of Canada’s most popular and successful rock bands, as evidenced by two nominations for the 2009 Juno Music Awards – for Best Group and Best Rock Album.  The group – which includes vocalist Colin MacDonald, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, bassist Jack Syperek, and drummer Sean Dalton – is preparing a U.S. release of April 7, 2009 (Bumstead / MRV / Set-Up) for the album that is up for the aforementioned award, ‘No Time for Later,’ and its lead-off single, "Paranoid Freak."

"We just found out this morning that we are nominated for two Juno awards," enthuses Colin MacDonald. "We are thrilled with this news, we’ve always been very proud of this album and we’re very happy that it’s getting recognized." The Nova Scotia conceived and Toronto-based group has also earned nominations at the 2005 and 2004 Juno Awards, in addition to winning the 2008 Best Hard Rock Song in the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards and the 2007 Favorite Rock Artist & Group of the Year at the 2007 Indie Awards, plus being nominated for 2006’s Best New Band by SPIN.com.

Additionally, accolades from others continue to pour in. Kindah Mardam Bey at AnE Vibe described ‘No Time for Later’ as being "Jam packed with brilliant tracks set for the charts – when rock music is this good, even I could listen to it all day," the Calgary Sun called the album "A regular masterpiece of rock n’ roll," while Creative Loafing raved, "Exciting, brash crunch rockers who connect like prime Humble Pie."

With their homeland already conquered, the group has their sights set on spreading the word throughout the U.S., as evidenced by a message from the band specifically to their stateside admirers.  "We’re very proud of this album and we can’t wait to share it with our American fans. We hope you will like this album as much as we do!"

Eagle Rock Entertainment is readying its catalogue for the spring season. Check out the many CD/DVD/Blu-Ray releases that Eagle has in store!

Various Artists – ‘From The Basement’/DVD

It is rare to be able to watch raw live performances that are stripped of everything except the artists and music. From The Basement, the new series on IFC, has done just that. Without any small talk or a live audience, and feeding only off of the energy the music itself delivers, viewers get to experience the music at the forefront in its rawest, most intimate form.  From The Basement is a compilation of the best performances from the show’s first season, including performances by Radiohead (and solo performances from Thom Yorke), The White Stripes, Super Furry Animals, Sonic Youth, Eels, Albert Hammond Jr., PJ Harvey, and Beck.

March 17

Rory Gallagher/’Live in Cork’/DVD

Guitar virtuoso Rory Gallagher returned home to Ireland in 1987, where he performed at the Opera House in Cork. This exciting homecoming event was captured by Irish Television and is now being released.  An absolute treasure for fans, this DVD features not only the concert (originally released on VHS as "Messin’ With The Kid – Live At The Cork Opera House"), but some stellar bonus material. "Rough Guide To Rory’s Cork" gets close and personal with Gallagher, featuring footage of his hometown, photos, memorabilia, and anecdotes. There is also another short documentary called "Big Guns" and a comprehensive discography. This is surely a DVD that no Rory Gallagher fan should be without!

Return To Forever/’Returns’/2CD

32 years after their last album, Romantic Warrior, was released, Return To Forever reunited in 2008 for their first tour in 25 years, proving the magic continues.  Now, one of those performances has been captured on a 2CD set.  Featuring Chick Corea (former Miles Davis pianist), bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Lenny White and guitarist Al Di Meola (the most successful RTF lineup, and the quartet that kickstarted ’70s jazz-rock fusion).

March 31

Asia/’Fantasia-Live in Tokyo’/Blu-Ray

The release of Fantasia-Live In Tokyo on Blu-ray (originally released on standard DVD October 2007 through Eagle Vision) captured Asia’s memorable March 2007 concert featuring the original line up of Geoff Downes (keyboards; Yes), Steve Howe (guitars; Yes), Carl Palmer (drums; Emerson, Lake, & Palmer), and John Wetton (vocals and bass; King Crimson).

Paul Rodgers/’Live In Glasgow’/Blu-Ray

There are always new and notable accomplishments for Paul Rodgers since he started his career with Free in 1968. The 70’s brought Bad Company. In the 90’s, Rodgers second solo album, which featured Brian May of Queen, was nominated for a Grammy.  He later re-joined May and the rest of Queen as their frontman for their first tour since the passing of Freddie Mercury, an association that continues to this day. On an Autumn night in 2006, Paul performed an array of songs from his long and illustrious career, including "All Right Now", "Bad Company", "Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love", "Wishing Well", and "Feel Like Making Love." This Blu-Ray is his first-ever filmed concert (originally released on standard DVD May 2007 on Eagle Vision). Live in Glasgow is 125 minutes of one of the great voices and songwriters of rock.

Jeff Beck/’Performing This Week…Live At Ronnie Scott’s’/DVD and Blu-Ray

Jeff Beck has had a limitless career for over 40 years, stretching genres and consistently bringing the guitar to new levels. His guitar prowess will be visually displayed for the first time. This corresponding DVD to the Fall 2008 CD release Performing This Week….Live At Ronnie Scott’s includes special guest appearances from Joss Stone, Imogen Heap, and Beck’s former Yardbird’s bandmate, Eric Clapton. Beck’s live band includes Tal Wilkenfeld (bass), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards) and contains a compilation of songs from the multiple nights at Ronnie Scott’s. The Blu-ray installment includes an exclusive 7-track rockabilly set.

For five decades, Yes has been a reigning pinnacle of rock music, bringing a level of craftwork, creativity, and innovation that most bands can only wish to achieve. Going far beyond the parameters of traditional Rock ‘N’ Roll, they have created symphonic masterpieces. Eagle Rock Entertainment, through their Eagle Records subsidiary, is proud to present Symphonic Live, an epic 2CD set which captures these progressive rock titans live.

Previously released as a 2DVD set (that is now certified platinum in Canada), Symphonic Live is an aural treat, exploring the expansive nature of Yes’ music with the flair of a backing orchestra. Touring to support their symphonic album Magnification, they hit the road in 2001 with a new approach to their live set. They called in the help of the European Festival Orchestra, conducted by Wilhelm Keitel, to add lush new textures to their live set, essentially bringing the spirit of their new album to life on the stage. Not only did they play tracks from Magnification, but re-imagined interpretations of their timeless hits. Classics such as "Owner Of A Lonely Heart," "Long Distance Runaround" and "I’ve Seen All Good People" have never sounded so grand.

This use of a full orchestra, while incredibly fresh and bold, does not distract from the band.  Jon Anderson’s voice soars, as if attempting to reach Nirvana, while the virtuosity of guitarist Steve Howe and bassist Chris Squire weave melodies into entrancing soundscapes. The drumming of Alan White goes far beyond the task of keeping time. It re-writes it, with time signatures that should be studied just as much as enjoyed.

Constantly redefining the definition of progressive rock, Yes’ Symphonic Live brings a much bigger sound to their already stunning catalogue. Along with previous releases such as Live at Montreux (available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and CD – Eagle Rock), Yes never fail to make a concert a showcase of musical acrobatics and instrumental beauty. Prepared to be wowed.

THESE GREEN EYES:  New Album Revamped With Bonus Tracks Due Out March 24

Blackledge Music (with distribution by Atlantic/ADA) has decided to make changes to the final version of THESE GREEN EYES’ forthcoming RELAPSE TO RECOVERY album, which is due out March 24.

Due to a barrage of Internet leaks, the label will now be releasing the physical CD with two exclusive bonus tracks (“Friends Like These” and “Pops”).  These songs will not be available on digital outlets such as iTunes and Amazon.   Additional liner notes, album credits and lyrics will be made available on the band’s Myspace page for download.

Tackling issues of friendship, loss, remorse, and ultimately hope, RELAPSE TO RECOVERY boils down five years of trials and tribulations as a unit, culminating with the tragic and unexpected loss of a close band friend to suicide.

Varying from a world-weary worldview (opener "At The End") to high octane vendettas (the scream-along chorus of "Sucker Punch") to ruminations on the loss of friendship (the wistful closer "Time Of Our Lives"), THESE GREEN EYES—Colin Cunningham (vocals), Greg Mauro (guitars), Jeff Krenn (guitars), Zach Braz (bass), Mark Brundrett (drums)–have channeled their punk, post-hardcore, and arena rock influences into an anthemic wall of sound that’s all their own.

The album’s already racking in rave reviews.  To wit:

“It is a high-energy rocker with great vocals, excellent harmonizing and some amazing instrumental work.”

      –Jim Pasinski, Record-Journal (CT),

      January 12, 2009

“The eleven tracks sparkle with an urgency heightened by aggressive guitar work (courtesy of Greg Mauro and Jeff Krenn), driving bass and drums (Zach Braz and Mark Brundrett, respectively), and rock-solid vocals (from Colin Cunningham)…These Green Eyes’ music is driving and visceral influenced by punk, post-hardcore and arena rock making for a dynamic, melodic listening experience; personally, I like the group harmonies, catchy hooks and near-prog-like rhythmic changes…it’s everything I like about rock rolled up into one band! I’m now on a mission to find their first album– “House of Glass”–and see how it compares to this triumphant release!”

      –Lucky Clark, Kennebec Journal/

Morning Sentinel (ME), January 2, 2009

“Mixing off beat rhythms, catchy hooks, group vocals and powerful vocals, These Green Eyes are sure to make heads turn with their full- length…”

–Gian Erguiza, Frantikmag.com

Stay tuned for news about the band’s upcoming U.S. tour, which is set to include 3 stops along the Warped Tour route later this summer.

Finally, Beastie Boys have signed on as a headliner for the 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN. It will be the band’s first ever appearance at Bonnaroo.

The Black Lips Get Kicked Out Of India

Like the Sex Pistols’ January ’78 tour of the Deep South, The Black Lips recent expedition to India was marked by a series of fairly seismic culture shocks. Everything from bottle-throwing fans at a gig in Pune, to livid show promoters in Chennai, all in response to a bunch of full-frontal punk rock provocateurs from Atlanta. For those that still haven’t heard the story, the band was booked to play on India’s equivalent of American Idol, The "Campus Rock Idol" Tour, a big-ticket televised series with large corporate sponsors. Last Saturday, in Chennai, the band entertained the crowd with what stateside fans would consider a typically raucous Black Lips show, replete with intra-band lip locking, and Cole de-pantsing, mooning the crowd, and attempting to play his six-string with, well, his privates. Barely okay in America, definitely NOT okay in India, the band was subsequently chased out of the country and the sponsors pulled the plug, effectively canceling the rest of the tour and the television season. The events have caused an international wave of news coverage, rounded out by everything from defensive "It’s only rock n roll" stories to meatier pieces that tease out the more nuanced concepts at play here, namely artistic freedom versus cultural respect.

Considering the wealth of information – some accurate, some not so much – that washed up on American shores after the event, it’s fortunate that VBS.tv cameras were there to document what transpired. Over the coming weeks, VBS will be running a series entitled "The Black Lips in India," which faithfully documents the band’s turbulent experience before and after the Chennai gig, their escape to King Khan’s pad in Berlin, and beyond. The (100% NSFW!) trailer for the series — which captures every bit of Cole — is now available on VBS.tv.

MR. PLOW Unleashes The Raunch In the U.S.

Celebrating his 10th year of erratic springing, Mr. Plow releases his latest masterpiece APOCALYPSE PLOW on Crusty/Reversed Records, March 17th, 2009.

Mr. Plow is a solo acoustic, punk folker hailing from the back corridor of east Vancouver, B.C. Mixing a raunchy overtone of comedy with a punk folk and roll flavor. (Best described as GG Allin meets Neil Young in a bar room brawl on roller skates without the flinging pooh!)

Mr. Plow is a touring maniac, has been obsessively, berating audiences all over North America for the last ten years. Compiling over 40 tours, Mr. Plow has travelled with some legendary acts over the years, including Fishbone, D.O.A., SNFU, Dayglo Abortions and has shared the stage with Bob Log III, Antiseen, Blowfly, Nomeansno, Hanson Brothers, Strung Out, Bane, Groovie Ghoulies, the 3tards, the Ripcordz, Deadbolt and many, many more.

Mr. Plow has released four discs over the last 6 years through Crusty/Bad Stain Records, selling over 5000 units off the stage alone.

This time around he has enlisted a cast from some of the best of the best to add their flavours and styling’s to the collage of catchy little ditties. Metal God, Gene Hoglan (SYL, Death, Dark Angel, Dethklok, Testament, Meldrum) beating the tubs, Norwood Fisher (Fishbone, Trulio Disgracias) slaps out some mad bass vibes, Rocky George (X-Suicidal Tendicies, Fishbone) shreds out some smoking guitar riffs and classic solos. And it doesn’t stop there!! Oderus Urungus and Flattus Maximus (GWAR) flew in from their homeland in Antarctica to lend a hand with some guest vocals and flailing lead guitar. Angelo Moore (Fishbone), Chris “the Heathen” Valago (Zimmer’s Hole), Chi Pig (SNFU), and the lovely Plow Angel’s (Sarah Jane and Krista) all lend their vocal cords to spice up the mix.
