Communic
This band totally disappointed me with a flat and lifeless performance. I loved their latest album PAYMENT OF EXISTENCE, but to neglect WAVES OF VISUAL DECAY by only playing one song from it is to my mind criminal. The band is extremely accomplished musically, with vocalist/guitarist Oddleif Stensland excelling himself. Superb voice with great guitarwork, I suppose it’s a little unfair to ask him to provide visual entertainment as well. Still, I’d hoped for a less run-of-the-mill performance from Communic. The only bit of humour in an otherwise dour and functional 40 minutes came right at the start – when the announcer proclaimed the band to be from Denmark. The Norwegians shrugged it off (maybe that’s why they were so meh – imagine a Kiwi mistaken for an Aussie, a Canadian for an American, a Scotsman for an Englishman, a Portugeezer for a Spaniard – you’d be pissed off too!)

I’ve seen these guys three or four times over the past six months, but don’t seem to have tired of them at all. There’s something special about this band – you get the feeling that they’ll never run out of creative ideas, and they’ll never stop weaving their cold threads of pagan/folk/black metal on their cathedral-sized tapestries. With a great flapping backdrop, bloodstained faces and some fucking killer requiems, the Finns enthralled and entranced as per usual. They are at the forefront of this fashionable folk metal craze at the moment, but make no mistake about it, they have the goods to deliver – high quality metal that sounds good on CD and even better on stage. If they come to within 200 miles of you, don’t fucking hesitate, for the sake of supporting good, honest and brilliant metal.
