January 2008

Spread the metal:

On February 1, multi-Platinum rockers Journey will release their new Virtual Island in Second Life. A grand opening party is planned inside Second Life at the "Journey Rock Band" sim and will feature a meet and greet with band members.  Live DJs will be spinning many of Journey’s classic hits, recorded studio and live performances, as well as lots of other great music for fans to party to! The grand opening party is scheduled to start at 10:00am ET/PT. The Journey Island region in Second Life is named “Journey Rock Band”.  Learn more at www.secondlife.com.

Journey has long been known for innovations in stage sets, so creating a Second Life Island for fans to enjoy was an easy decision. The Island features dedicated areas for each album along with audio and video presentations. There are also two venues on the island, the Escape Club and the Captured Amphitheater, where live SL events can be held.

Journey’s newly redesigned website, www.journeymusic.com, will be re-launch on or around January 29.  It will feature band history, tour information, photos and a new forum.

Journey is currently working on a new album with legendary producer Kevin Shirley, which they hope to release by spring/summer 2008.  Their 2008 world tour begins in Santiago, Chile mid-February.  More tour dates will be announced soon.

The Journey Island was built by Industrial-Design.com, Journey’s long time web developer and features work by SL builders Farrokh Vavoom, Argus Collingwood, Adrian Harbinger and Jocelyn Sands.

Recent Press Release:

Journey–Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums)–is proud to introduce fans all over the world to their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda ("pin-eh-da"). He replaces Jeff Scott Soto, who parted ways with the band earlier this year after stepping in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band in 2006 for medical reasons.

Arnel hails from Quezon City in the Philippines and has been singing Journey songs–in addition to original material–with his band, The Zoo, for the past couple of years in clubs all over his homeland. Joining the legendary band is a dream come true for him.

"It’s so exciting to sing with one of the best bands in the world. It’ll be a lot of hard work on my part and I’m actually looking forward to the scrutiny I’ll get from the hardcore Journey fans. I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like `the voice` (Steve Perry), but that will never happen. I know there’s only one Steve Perry in this world."

When it was time for Journey to look for a new lead singer, the internet came to their rescue. Guitarist Neal Schon wanted someone new to the music business, so he turned to YouTube. After finding Arnel singing "Faithfully," he knew he had found the perfect frontman.

"I was frustrated about not having a singer," explains guitarist Neal Schon, "so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted. After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, `he can’t be that good. But he is that good, he’s the real deal and so tremendously talented. Arnel doesn’t sound synthetic and he’s not emulating anyone. I tried to get a hold of him through YouTube and I finally heard from him that night, but it took some convincing to get him to believe that it really was me and not an imposter."

Arnel Pineda picks up the story: "My friend Noel picked up the message on YouTube and told me it was from Neal. I thought it was a hoax so I ignored it. Noel said, `what if it really was Neal and he wanted to offer you the chance of a lifetime?` So I e-mailed Neal back and the rest is history."

"Arnel brings a soulful and passionate voice to Journey," continues keyboardist Jonathan Cain. "His personality is very well-suited to our music. He’s a sincere, authentic person with a great smile and a big heart. I think fans are really going to love him. With Arnel’s soaring tenor, Journey returns to our heritage sound."

Schon agrees, "We feel reborn. I think there’s a lot of chemistry between the five of us. At first we were going to go into the studio and just write 4 songs, but now it’s escalated to a lot of great new and diverse material. The stuff sounds tremendous. Everyone’s so stoked about it. We feel very fortunate to have found Arnel."

The Beautiful Piano, the latest CD by gifted musician Debbie Fortnum is in the special position of already having been nominated for three and winning one Canadian GMA Covenant Awards from its 2007 independent release.  D2/Fontana North/Universal was so impressed by her talent they are releasing three CDs in the next year by Fortnum starting with The Beautiful Piano on February 26, 2008.

The Beautiful Piano was produced in collaboration with Chris Janz, multi-Award winning artist/producer and son of Canadian Juno Award legend, Paul Janz.  His expertise in orchestral arranging has an unmistakable presence on the CD, taking it to star quality. After a 1995 meeting, the two musicians clicked and Janz produced four out of her five albums.

“He’s incredibly gifted, and is the encouraging dynamite underneath my piano playing,” says Fortnum.”  “There is nothing that makes me feel more alive than being in the recording studio. There is not one single sheet of music in the studios when we record.  It is all a very spontaneously creative and moving experience.”

As she began to follow her musical dreams, fans began to follow.  Her four Indie CDs, both vocal and piano, keep selling off shelves.  Though not counted by Soundscan, she is one of Canada’s best selling Indie Artists, selling over 16,000 from stage and internet. Fortnum has received a total of 14 Canadian Award Nominations and three Awards in 2006 & 2007.

“My experience as a Wedding Pianist (she has played at over 100 weddings since age 13) has helped me learn what instrumental piano music can do for people,” explains Fortnum.  “In our crazy, busy culture, we are lacking healthy ways to retreat, think, process our own thoughts and emotions and even breathe long enough to re-connect with what’s most important in life.”

The Beautiful Piano is an intensely personal album for Fortnum as she wrote instrumental songs for each of her children in her living room on her Grandmother’s antique piano.  There are also two bonus vocal tracks including “I Am Yours” that she wrote / sang for her husband on their wedding day.  “Chris loved it, saying that it is one of the best songs he’d ever heard come out of me and that we needed to record it,” explains Fortnum. “I’m a hopeless romantic so I called my husband Scott and asked if I could share "our song" with the world and he said of course.”

With over 96+ touring dates last year, and even more on the calendar for 2008, Debbie is hitting the road again with an inspiring musical message of Love, Hope and Beauty through her music!

As well, before Fortnum begins touring for The Beautiful Piano, she is scheduled to record her third Instrumental Piano CD for the New Age market called The Healing Piano.   Her enchanting Christmas Piano CD will also be re-launched in the Fall of 2008, and Healing Piano in early 2009 with D2/Fontana North/Universal Records.

”A rare combination of musical ability, maturity and significant gift of songwriting!”  ~Nashville Producer and Award-winning songwriter, Dick Tunney

”One of the many things that we appreciate about Debbie is her ability to reach out and touch all ages and types of women. Her musical talent unquestionably is one of the best.  If you have met Debbie once, you will feel you have

a friend forever." ~Conference / Event Planner from Bellingham, WA

”Debbie always seems to find a way to engage so many people in what is happening around the world. Her  support to the victims of the tsunami, earthquakes, hurricanes, and flooding has been substantial. Only God knows how many lives were touched by her ministry.”  ~Ben Hoogendoorn, President Canadian Food for the Hungry International

Canadian Tour Dates to be announced soon.

All Matt Zane Suspension Disscussion Banned From Criss Angel Message Board

Days following Matt Zane snapping Criss Angels suspension record using only 4 hooks (Angel used 8) a lot of heated discussion has surfaced on fan sites and even Angels official message board located at crissangel.yuku.com/directory It seems Criss has a major problem with losing the record and fielding questions from his loyal fans. Apparently the threads discussing Zane setting the new world record have been removed and any new attempts of posting information concerning the suspension is deleted within minutes.

"It doesn’t surprise me." Says Zane "Not only did I outlast him in terms of length, I did it with only 4 hooks instead of 8. A lot of his fans wrote me and said it was impossible and there was no way I could last 6 hours. Well I did and now his fans have to admit that Criss isn’t number one concerning one of his stunts. That generated a lot of speculation on his site to whether or not Criss would try to beat me. I don’t think he is up for it and I believe he just wants this whole thing to go away."

Angel refusing to acknowledge previous suspensions is nothing new for the rocker magician. In 2000 Joey Strange, an underground suspension artist, was suspended from a helicopter for Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. Although the stunt was recorded and aired almost five years prior to Angel repeating the stunt on Mindfreak he has never mentioned or given credit to Strange.

T-shirts can now be purchased which feature Zane suspending that read "Angel Killer" at

Zane is currently recovering and will soon have articles regarding his suspension in Bizarre, XBiz and an in depth interview on a soon to be announced talk show.

Zane was told the news the next day at the show. "Tera kept asking Wayne if he told me. Wayne just kept saying that he wanted her to tell me. So when they finally did I was shocked. Virgin/EMI to Release Roxy Music 2-DVD Anthology

Definitive Video Anthology, to be Released February 5 by Virgin/EMI, Presents 38 Music Videos, Concert Performances and TV Appearances in a 2-DVD Set

Since the early 1970s, Roxy Music has been known for its combined idiosyncratic experimentation, sophisticated wit and highly developed visual presentation.  For the first time, the band’s best filmed material has been collected for release in a definitive DVD collection.  The Thrill Of It All: A Visual History (1972-1982), to be released February 5 by Virgin/EMI, includes 38 music videos, concert clips and television performances, many of which have never before been released, on two DVDs.

The Thrill Of It All: A Visual History (1972 – 1982) vividly captures the three phases of the band’s recording career. Packed with live footage, the collection’s two DVDs follow early Roxy Music’s journey, beginning with the band’s first filmed performance in June 1972 at the Royal College of Art.

Roxy Music’s 1972 and 1973 appearances on “The Old Grey Whistle Test” and “Top of the Pops,” when feathers, sequins and animal prints were de rigeur, spotlight the band’s strikingly eclectic visual presentation in stark contrast to the sober attire of their audiences. The 1973 performance of “Editions of You” at the Montreux Golden Rose Festival, the last filmed performance of Brian Eno with the band, is a significant rarity.

Three tracks from the “Musikladen” TV show, filmed in 1974, feature new member and Eno replacement Eddie Jobson, a seated Phil Manzanera nursing a broken foot, and the band’s only live performance of “Amazona” from its third album, Stranded, the band’s first of four U.K. Number One albums.  In the collection’s five 1976 performances filmed in Stockholm, Bryan Ferry’s eye patch was mistakenly taken as a fashion statement, along with his moustache and GI uniform.

Disc 2 sees Roxy Music on the “ABBA in Switzerland” special performing “Dance Away” with bass player number seven, followed by the band’s Manchester Apollo concert in 1979, marking the advent of the famous Anthony Price red leather suit.  “Angel Eyes” was directed by Anthony Price, who also designed the costumes.  The promo film for “Jealous Guy,” Roxy Music’s only U.K. Number One single and the band’s tribute to John Lennon, was filmed in Adelaide while on tour. The 1982 Frejus concert, from which four performances are featured in the new collection, was part of the Avalon tour supporting the band’s Number One album.  No one knew at the time that fans would have to wait 18 years until they would have another chance to ‘Do The Strand’ at a Roxy Music concert; the band would not tour again until 2001.

From their earliest steps, Roxy Music left a massive footprint on British popular culture. Formed in 1971 by Bryan Ferry, Andy Mackay and Brian Eno, the axis was completed with the arrival of Paul Thompson and Phil Manzanera, by which time the music press was already buzzing. Their self-titled debut album in the summer of 1972, declared by many then and ever since as the best first album ever, cleared the path for a saunter into the U.K. Top Five by the ravishingly stylish first single “Virginia Plain.” Before the year ended, Roxy Music had completed their first tours of both the U.K. and the U.S., and fans everywhere agreed: here was a triumph of style and musical substance.

Almost everything that happened chez Roxy during the next decade has become part of the fabric of rock history, from rule-trashing singles like “Pyjamarama,” “Street Life” and “Love Is The Drug” to Ferry’s ever-influential wardrobe and the band’s legendary album covers.  They topped the U.K. album charts three times during their active lifetime, with 1973’s Stranded, 1980’s Flesh and Blood and their last studio album, 1982’s Avalon. In 1986, the compilation album Street Life raced to Number One on the U.K. chart and remained in the top spot for five weeks.

Rocket Scientists Song Included in Japan Opera Company Production

Songwriter Erik Norlander embraces new "Revolution Road" rendition

The acclaimed all-female Japanese theater company Takarazuka has used the Rocket Scientists song "Revolution Road" in its fall production of "Adieu Marceille/Love Symphony" which ran in < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Tokyo from September 21 to October 29, 2007. "Revolution Road" was used in the production alongside compositions by John Coltrane, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer, and Cole Porter. A live CD of the production was release on December 20, 2007.

"Revolution Road" songwriter Erik Norlander comments, "It was a real thrill to hear my music played in this context with such a lavish orchestral arrangement. I particularly enjoyed the dramatic horn parts which reminded me of the famous John Barry James Bond scores. Also, to be included in a production next to such legendary jazz composers is a tremendous honor for me."

"Revolution Road" was released November 7th, 2006 on the epic 2CD album of the same title by American progressive rock legends Rocket Scientists. An extraordinary blend of melodic and memorable songwriting with adventurous instrumental fireworks, "Revolution Road" took the band to new heights of artistic achievement. The CD features founding members Mark McCrite (guitar, vocals), Erik Norlander (keyboards) and Don Schiff (NS/Stick) along with special guest performers.

Think Tank Media has just released a 5-disc multimedia box set called "Rocket Scientists – Looking Backward" that reissues the band’s first three studio albums along with a fourth disc of new studio recordings and a DVD of in-studio performances, extensive interviews and historical footage.

Chris Koster, a multiple-threat on keyboard, guitar and vocals, continues in the tradition of Prince and Trent Reznor – self-contained, self-produced visionaries who know exactly where they are going and how to get there. Sex, Love & Morality, the long awaited follow up to 2005’s debut album Secrets of the Lonely, showcases his progression as a truly gifted artist.   Koster will unleash this gift on Valentines Day with a special CD Release party in Toronto on February 14, 2008 at Tattoo Rock Bar followed by extensive touring across Canada.

Sex, Love & Morality is an album that is truly unique and stimulating with stand out tracks like the first single “Heavy Hearted”, “Montreal,” “I’m Just Trying To Break Your Heart” and “I Don’t Feel Like Dancing”.  The title track is very much a concise theme on Sex, Love & Morality; in one way shape or form those three things are involved in all of the tracks and sometimes the fight between the three.

A prolific songwriter, Koster wrote over a hundred and twenty songs to prepare for his first album, while for the follow up his songwriting style developed to be more selective.  One reason for this progression was his relationship with legendary producer Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Kiss, Jane’s Addiction).  “He helped me hone my craft,” says Koster, “he really pushed me to do something different and challenged me.”

Being a hypnotic and mesmerizing live performer, Koster is eager to tour this record and is sure to make an impact with audiences one way or the other.  “When people see our live shows they either watch the show or leave the venue, it’s as simple as that,” explains Koster. “It forces you to make a decision and that’s definitely all I’ve ever set out to do.”  The artist and the record defy categorization. The music is granular, complex and mutli-layered but also remarkably accessible and memorable.

With the natural looks of a rock star, he appears dark, aloof and impenetrable; Koster is respected by the most gifted of musicians but also embraced by the average lover of pop music. Sex, Love & Morality is sure to make an impact with music fans and rank Koster among the most talented artists to come out of Canada.

All Time Low + Mayday Parade Tour Together * Two Hottest Bands On ‘The Scene’? Indeed!

All Time Low (Hopeless Records) and Mayday Parade (Fearless Records), the two hottest bands on the ‘scene’ right now, are teaming up for a month long tour starting next week to get 2008 started out right. All Time Low’s debut album So Wrong, It’s Right which debuted at #62 on the Billboard Top 200 after its release on September 25th and has now sold upwards of 53,000 including almost 4,000 this past week. ATL might just be the #1 pop punk buzz band on the scene right now…Fresh out of high school, they’ve sold almost 70,000 copies of their debut EP Put Up Or Shut Up, 42% digitally (which is a HUGE #) with almost no promotion or marketing behind it. It’s been completely organic as they’ve been developing a rabid fanbase online and on the road. They were on Warped Tour all summer and the crowds got bigger and bigger at every show. They finished 2007 in style with big tours with the Plain White T’s, The Starting Line and Boys Like Girls. Look for ATL headlining the Alternative Press Tour this Spring!

Additional Tour Dates without Mayday:

1/29/2008 Wilmington, North Carolina Lucky’s Pub

1/30/2008 Jacksonville, Florida Jack Rabbits

1/31/2008 Tallahassee, Florida Beta Bar

Mayday Parade’s debut album A Lesson In Romantics came out late this summer and has now scanned over 38,000 and counting! They hit #10 on the Billboard Heatseeker Chart this past week, selling over 3,000 records. Mayday sold also over 18,000 individual track downloads in the same week. Mayday Parade are a great story…two years ago they followed Warped Tour around in their van, played in the parking lot and sold CD’s to kids in line (accumulating to 20,000 copies sold of their self-released EP). This year they were actually on Warped Tour and were one of the biggest stories on the tour, with more and more kids freaking out to their live show every day. For those who find themselves guilty of secretly (or openly) liking the All-American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, Something Corporate or Taking Back Sunday – Mayday Parade is a band you need to check out ASAP. It’s pop goodness at its most polished and most addictive.
