SATANIC CURSES is Mystic Prophecy’s fifth album and is the follow-up album to last year’s SAVAGE SOULS. Both guitarist Gus G and drummer Ekdahl have left the band and were replaced by Matthias Straub on drums and two guitarists take Gus G’s place. Many of the band’s fans thought that their career was over after the big success with NEVER-ENDING in 2004, but they were wrong. The band followed up with the magnificent SAVAGE SOULS and the band was in the game again. The pressure is really high for them to top SAVAGE SOULS. Musically Mystic Prophecy haven’t changed their formula; they still play the same fast and heavy power/heavy metal. The big change is the two guitarists that deliver a much more massive wall of guitar riffs.
The band has done a cover of the Black Sabbath song “Paranoid” which they’ve managed to make their own. The rest of the 11 songs are just as heavy and mean as ever after listening to the album numerous times and it gets only better and better.
My favorite tracks are “Back from the Dark”, “Dark Forces”, “Evil of Destruction”, “Damnation” and “Rock The Night”. Those are all faster, harder and edgier songs; however, the slower and calmer songs “Sacrifice Me”, “Satanic Curses”, “We Will Survive” and “Grave of Thousands Lies” are also easy to the ear.
SATANIC CURSES is a masterpiece in its purest form; it stands the test and Massacre Records have discovered a gold mine named Mystic Prophecy. There’s nothing negative to note and the band is back to prove all the doubters wrong.
