Talisman – 7

Spread the metal:

2006, Frontiers Records/Zink Music
Rating: 4/5

Believe it or not, Talisman has been in the industry for 16 years and has developed their own identity that has stood the test of time. It has taken the band three years to follow up their previous album CATS AND DOGS. In between these releases the members have been busy on their own. Lead singer Jeff Scott Soto’s been involved in Soul SirkUS and toured with Journey last summer. Marcel Jacob and Jamie Borger worked with Last Autumn’s Dream, and Borger also reunited with his old band Treat. Fredrik Åkesson has become a steady member in Arch Enemy in addition to his partnership in Krux. But now, all the members are focused on Talisman and 7.

Talisman still plays their patented melodic hardrock with the main focus on JSS’s brilliant lead vocals and Åkesson’s ruff guitar playing. As always, the band delivers well-written material and nothing can go wrong with Soto and Jacob behind the songwriting.

“Falling”, “Nowhere Fast”, “Succumb to My Desire”, “Shed a Tear Goodbye”, and “Troubled Water” are all ordinary melodic hardrock, Talisman style. “Rhyme or Reason” and “The 1 I’m Living 4” are two mid-tempo songs that border on being up-tempo ballads, and in the pure ballads “Forevermore” and “Back 2 the Feeling” Soto shows why he is one of the best melodic hardrock singers in the world.

Talisman is Talisman and on 7 they once again prove why they are one of the best melodic hardrock acts alive today. Invest in this opus if you’re a Talisman fan or just want to listen to proper melodic hardrock played by the absolute best. The only question is if it’s really time for another Talisman album with Åkesson touring with Arch Enemy and Soto with Journey.
